New Zealand’s dominant three year old Jimmy Choux has won the $2.2m Group 1 New Zealand Derby.
He defeated Historian by two lengths, with a length and three quarters to On The Level in third.
These three came away from the rest of the field, with the fourth horse Yin Yang Master more than four lengths behind On The Level.
Despite stamina queries, Jimmy Choux was dominant at his first try at 2400m.
Class shone through in the end, as he held Historian in the run to the line.
Unlike other New Zealand Derby winners, who come to the AJC Derby after winning the NZ Derby, Jimmy Choux will be aimed at Australia’s toughest mile if he pulls up okay.
Trainer John Bary told Just Horse Racing last month that Jimmy Choux’s primary aim following the Derby would be the Group 1 Doncaster Mile on April 16.
