Grandfather and grandson training duo hope the rain stays away ahead of Sandown

An unseasonal winter snap will have a bearing on whether Carlo Vidotto and grandson Clay Beasy have dual representation at Sandown.

The pair has Morpheus Bragi in the Thoroughbred Club Australia Handicap (1300m) and Bella Nights in the Ladbrokes Blended Bets Handicap (1300m) entered on Wednesday.

Beasy said Morpheus Bragi, a horse he considers may be up to autumn three-year-old company, was a 50-50 chance of running while Bella Nights will take her place.

Both horses enter Wednesday’s race as last start winners.

Morpheus Bragi was successful as an odds-on favourite at Pakenham on November 4 while Bella Nights scored at Bendigo two days early.

The pair was part of a winning run that saw Vidotto and Beasy saddle four winners in the space of a week from their small stable.

“We’ve been going well. It’s been a good start to the racing season for us,” Beasy said.

Beasy said there had been some hype surrounding Morpheus Bragi which was accentuated prior to his debut when placed in a Mornington jumpout behind Streets Of Avalon and Mornington Glory.

A debut third at Mornington was following by the Pakenham win which convinced the trainers a trip to Sandown was on the cards.

“He did a lot wrong at Pakenham but getting on the bigger track helped him and that is why we wanted to go to Sandown,” Beasy said.

“But this rain we’ve been getting is not looking promising for us, so we’re 50-50 about running him.

“The track is a Heavy 8 and it will depend on how much rain we get, so we’ll make a decision in the morning, but if he goes, he’ll have this run then go to the paddock for the autumn.”

Beasy said Bella Nights would be Sandown bound saying the mare loves the wet.

He also predicts she will be better suited if she can gain a sit in the run.

“She had her ears pricked the whole way last time and was waiting for them a little bit,” Beasy said.

“There’s a couple drawn inside her with a bit of speed so we’ll probably try and ride her outside the leader, or one-out, one-back, and I think Sandown will suit her also.”
