Cox Plate legend Hugh Bowman will chase a remarkable fifth victory in the famous race next Saturday, after being confirmed to ride ATC Derby winner Aeliana for champion trainer Chris Waller.
Now based in Hong Kong, Bowman — who famously partnered Winx to her four consecutive Cox Plate triumphs — will reunite with Waller for the $6 million feature, marking his first ride aboard Aeliana. The mare was one of three Waller-trained gallopers to impress during searching gallops at The Valley on Saturday morning.
Waller later confirmed his Cox Plate riding team, with Mark Zahra to take the reins on Buckaroo and James McDonald sticking with last year’s record-breaking winner Via Sistina. Meanwhile, Waller ruled out Autumn Boy, last Saturday’s Caulfield Guineas hero, from backing up in this year’s Cox Plate.
“It’s been a great place for Hugh, myself and our stable,” Waller said. “To have him back for the final running of the Cox Plate at The Valley before its redevelopment is pretty special.”
Waller revealed Bowman was yet to receive the official call but would soon be given the nod. “I know Hugh is keen to get on the plane. He hasn’t had the phone call yet, but he’ll be getting the thumbs up after this morning’s workout.”
Aeliana, who dazzled in her trackwork, has continued to please Waller in her preparation for the weight-for-age classic. “She’s taken to The Valley really well — she’s ready to go,” Waller said. “Her coat is starting to come through and she’s a definite runner. She’s eating well, her weight is good, and her blood’s right where we want it.”
While Waller admitted the mare’s coat had taken time to reach its peak, he’s confident she’ll turn heads come race day. “As they say, if they look good on the outside, they’re good on the inside. The next week will bring her right on. She might even have a bit of a glow about her by Cox Plate day.”
