The Adelaide Carnival kicked off at Morphettville, Eagle Farm hosted feature racing while at Hawkesbury, a quality three year old continued his winning ways. All that and more in this weeks edition of ‘The Good, The Bad and The Ugly’.
KEY NEWS:
Glint Of Hope Wins Oaks
The Busuttin/Young camp can be a hard stable to find from a betting perspective but they can train a big race winner and that was the case once again at Morphettville this Saturday, with Glint Of Hope taking out the Australasian Oaks (2000m), aided by an absolute peach from Daniel Moor, saving all the ground, and that won the horse the race, beating a gallant Barb Raider with My Whisper in third.
Count De Rupee Strong In Victory Stakes
After being poorly placed early in the prep, Team Price have found their groove with stable star Count De Rupee, who got a well deserved Stakes win at Eagle Farm on Saturday, taking out the Victory Stakes (1200m) in a driving go, giving Brock Ryan his biggest race win outside NSW.
Winning Tune For Mozart In Guineas
Mr Mozart continued his winning ways at Hawkesbury on Saturday, leading throughout to win the Hawkesbury Guineas (1400m). The horse got a tad keen in the run but he found in the straight when required and lifted under Pike to score. That is the third win on the bounce for the three year old.
PERFORMANCE OF THE WEEK:
Illation might be I’m Thunderstruck 2.0. Start two from a maiden straight to Stakes grade in the Nitschke, and he made an absolute mess of them. Granted, the runner up Defining had no luck, but that aside, Illation had panels on them, and the change up speed was that of a Group l horse. Really keen to see where they head.
DEBUT OF THE WEEK:
He did plenty wrong, but there was a bit to like about the debut win of Sergeant Hulka at Ipswich on Wednesday. He wandered about in the straight, which can happen at Ipswich for a horse on debut, but he knuckled down when straightened up to win. Not sure he’s city, but being trained by Garnett Taylor, can imagine him heading to North Queensland and run well.
RIDE OF THE WEEK:
Beaten ride, but loved the steer from Mick Dee aboard Douceur in the SA Oaks. I had her marked near last from the gate, but Mick Dee gave her a dig in the ribs and after 400m, she lobbed one off infifth/sixth spot and really, he couldn’t have done much more on the filly. She just wasn’t good enough, but loved the initiative.
SLAUGHTER OF THE WEEK:
One of my rules when it comes to betting and apprentice riders is that they need to be strong in pushing a horse out late. If they don’t have that and are more a rider that is well balanced, you must be able to whip in both hands. Tatum Bull is a rider I’d class as well balanced. Unfortunately she can’t whip in the left hand, based on her ride aboard Speed Lover at Mildura on Tuesday. No doubt in my mind that if she pulls the whip into the left hand and straighten the horse up, she wins.
