Star jockey Ben Melham will be sidelined for approximately six weeks following hip surgery.
Despite a successful spring highlighted by a Group 1 win in the Caulfield Guineas aboard Griff, Melham has faced challenges due to hip pain, which limited his ability to ride at lighter weights.
This issue, stemming from an earlier fall, affected his participation in major racing events.
Melham’s recent performance also includes finishing 2nd in the Golden Eagle on Pericles and 3rd in the Caulfield Cup on Gold Trip.
He achieved Group 2 victories and notable stakes wins on horses trained by Matt Laurie.
Acknowledging his surgery and recovery plan, Melham expressed gratitude towards Racing Victoria’s CMO, Dr. Ben Barresi, and the medical team.
He is also undergoing a minor shoulder procedure during this period.
Melham looks forward to returning to racing in top form for the upcoming autumn carnival, appreciating the support from owners, trainers, and the medical community.
