Gai Waterhouse, a legendary horse trainer, will not be attending the Warrnambool May Racing Carnival this year for the first time in a decade.
Waterhouse became a fan of the three-day event in 2012 and has been a regular attendee since then.
She typically stays in Port Fairy with her husband, Robbie, during the carnival, but this year, she will be on babysitting duties in Sydney for her grandchildren.
Waterhouse’s daughter, Kate, has secured a job on the coverage of the Kentucky Derby on May 6, and Waterhouse will be taking care of her grandchildren while Kate is away.
As a result, Waterhouse won’t be able to attend the Warrnambool carnival this year, but her husband will be there as he’ll be working.
Waterhouse and her training partner, Adrian Bott, will have only one runner at the carnival, Teofilo Star, who will run in the Maiden Hurdle on the opening day of the three-day carnival.
Waterhouse will be in Melbourne to watch her Melbourne Cup contender White Marlin run in the 2000-metre handicap.
