Jenni The Fox may only be the winner of a maiden, but trainer Lucy Yeomans believes there is a big race success in the mare.
However, Yeomans is realistic enough to know that is unlikely to come in The Supernova (1400m) at Pakenham on Saturday, but the trainer says the mare will not disgrace herself.
The Supernova has drawn together a strong field with Group 1 winners Here To Shock and Pinstriped engaged along with multiple Group 1 placed and Group 2 victor Private Eye down from Sydney chasing a part of the $1 million prize money that is on offer.
Saturday’s race is the second of two slot races conducted by Southside Racing with Jenni The Fox running in the slot held by her owner Tony Ottobre’s Cape Schank Racing.
The first was The Meteorite (1200m) at Cranbourne on November 22 in which Jenni The Fox ran an unlucky fourth, storming home to be on the placegetter’s heels.
“I think she is a serious horse, and we will see the best of her in six to 12 months,” Yeomans said.
“She can run a very quick sectional, the 1400 metres will suit, but there is a little query on the track as it has been a little sticky and if the rain comes, it might take the shine off her, but everyone is in the same boat.
“She’s a beautiful horse to train because you know on race day she will turn up and give you her best in any conditions and every time we run her, she keeps raising the bar.
“This is a tougher task again, so she will need to raise that bar again.
“We’re not confident by any stretch, but I am confident she will run well.”
Yeomans said Jenni The Fox appreciated the fast tempo that was set at Cranbourne last time out and with a shade more luck may has finished in the placings.
On Saturday, Jenni The Fox has drawn gate 12, and Yeomans said they will just take their medicine.
Jett Stanley takes the ride on Saturday following injuries to Blake Shinn and Declan Bates who have ridden Jenni The Fox in her last three starts.
“Hopefully I’m not the jinx,” Yeomans joked.
“Jett’s been riding for Tony, and he was his pick, and he’s come in and ridden a bit of work for me.
“It’s obviously a big task for him on a big day, but we think he’s up for the job.
“I took her to Pakenham on Tuesday for a gallop and Jett had a sit on her.
“She is quite a straightforward mare to ride, but at least he’s had a sit on her now and rode her beautifully, so we’re excited for Saturday.”
