Amelia’s Jewel is off to the United States after being purchased by Coolmore at Thursday night’s Chairman’s Sale.
Tom Magnier went to $3.8 million to secure the Group 1 winner at the Inglis auction in Sydney, with the express aim of matching her to their banner American stallion Justify.
That Triple Crown-winning son of Scat Daddy no longer shuttles to Australia, meaning Amelia’s Jewel will head to Coolmore’s American base in Kentucky, where she will be covered to Southern Hemisphere time before returning to Down Under.
“We’re going to send her to America to go to Justify, that’ll be the plan with her,” Magnier said.
“She’s a very good mover, she’s just a quality mare. She’s a household name, she’s the kind mare you dream about having, and we’re just very fortunate to get her.”
Coolmore’s plans mean Amelia’s Jewel has run her last race with the five-year-old daughter of Siyouni retiring a winner of 10 of her 24 starts, the biggest being the Northerly Stakes (1800m) in 2022.
She was a Group 2 winner as recently as the 1400m Guy Walter Stakes on March 1, was runner-up to Atishu in last year’s Group 1 Empire Rose Stakes (1600m) and was twice second in WA’s rich slot race, The Quokka (1200m).
A supplementary lot in the sale, Amelia’s Jewel was the final lot of this year’s Chairman’s Sale and the second highest-priced lot of the night behind Bella Nipotina, who sold for $4.2m.
That duo both bettered the sale’s previous record price of $3.6m, set by Nimalee two years ago.
Magnier spent more than any other Chairman’s shopper, buying Tiz Invincible and Estriella for $2.8 million each with the two daughters of I Am Invincible set to meet with Wootton Bassett in spring.
Coolmore on Thursday announced that Wootton Bassett, a son of Iffraaj, would stand at its Hunter Valley base for an Australian record $350,000, plus GST, this season.
Coolmore’s big buys and Bella Nipotina, who was bought by her breeder and former part-owner Micael Christian, were among the headline lots of the most successful Chairman’s Sale in history.
The sale grossed $54,430,000, which was more than $9.5m up on the previous record from 2023, while the $706,883 average was up 18 percent on last year.
