Australian breeding heavyweights Coolmore and Newgate Farm have joined forces in a significant agreement that will see talented colt Wodeton retire to stud in 2026.
The deal between the Coolmore ownership group and Henry Field’s Newgate operation ensures the son of Wootton Bassett will receive an opportunity at stud while also providing Australian breeders with continued access to the increasingly influential Wootton Bassett sireline in the Hunter Valley.
Wodeton will stand his first season at Newgate Farm in 2026 at an introductory service fee of $16,500, including GST.
The addition gives Newgate’s already powerful stallion roster a fresh new recruit at a time when relatively few high-profile first-season sires are entering the market.
The colt showed outstanding ability throughout his juvenile season. After winning impressively on debut, he went on to place in the Group 2 Silver Slipper Stakes, Group 2 Todman Stakes and Group 1 Golden Slipper.
While his career was often marked by narrow defeats and tough luck in major races, Newgate principal Henry Field believes the colt’s natural talent was obvious to those closest to him.
“Chris Waller was adamant from an early stage that Wodeton was one of the best juveniles he has ever trained,” Field said.
“As a two-year-old, the stable made it clear in no uncertain terms that he simply breathed different air.
“He demolished a quality field on debut and was denied Golden Slipper glory by the narrowest possible margin. He was the highest-rated colt of his generation and came within a nose of Australian racing immortality.
“In the Golden Slipper itself, he was desperately unlucky. He was held up at a crucial stage before charging home once clear, and there is little doubt that with uninterrupted running he wins the race.”
Wodeton was bred by Fairway Thoroughbreds and is out of the Listed-winning Exceed And Excel mare Fiera Vista.
Coolmore principal Tom Magnier secured the colt for $1.6 million from the Segenhoe Stud draft at the 2024 Magic Millions Yearling Sale on the Gold Coast, and connections are now hopeful his racetrack talent can translate into success in the breeding barn.
