Chris Munce says the best horse he ever rode was Dance Hero

Last night, former Champion jockey turned outstanding Queensland trainer Chris Munce, was interviewed by two other hoops.

Ryan Wiggins and Ronnie Stewart, entrepreneurs in their own right, have started their own recorded podcasts called Out The Gap.

You can find the full interview below.

And they do a pretty good job. Munce was interviewed for 90mins and it was actually compelling viewing.

Now, I write this to give the boys a push along but more so because several sections of the interview fascinated me.

One being, the question of which horse was the best that Munce rode during his career.

That’s always a fair question and an interesting question for jocks who ride many stars.

As a rider, Chris Munce won many Gr 1 races, including the 1998 Melbourne Cup on Jezabeel, but it was a sprinter he nominated.

“I never rode a champion, a Winx or anything like that but I did ride a lot of very good horses including Super Impose.

“But the one I have a soft spot for was a 2YO named DANCE HERO. He was a gelding but what he did, well if he was a colt you could write your own ticket.

“I’d say he’d have been worth $40 or $50 million, even back then in 2004. His achievements are lost behind the colts like Fastnet Rock and Pierro.

“He won two lead up races to the Magic Millions and then led all the way and brained them in the Magic Millions. Gai (Waterhouse) then freshened him up and brought him back for the Golden Slipper.

“I think he had one run leading into the Slipper which he won, then he ran what still is the fastest Golden Slipper time to win that, then he won the Gr 1 Sires’ Produce, then he won the Gr 1 Champagne Stakes over a mile.

“And back then, they weren’t a fortnight apart. They were bang, bang, bang, one Saturday, then the next, then the next.”

He was a super horse, and he trounced the likes of huge named stars Not A Single Doubt, Charge Forward, Fastnet Rock, Alinghi on the way. The era was saturated with superstars but, “because he was a gelding he doesn’t get any recognition yet what he did was out of this world.”
