Chautauqua has passed every runner to claim his first Group One win in the $2.5 million TJ Smith Stakes at Randwick.
Set what appeared to be an impossible task, Chautauqua got the right stride in on the line for jockey Tommy Berry to beat the outsider Lord Of The Sky.
“Honestly he was never in a winning position,” co-trainer Wayne Hawkes said.
“To come from last today and do what he did, that was pretty freaky.”
The favourite Terravista tried to make his run with Chautauqua but he couldn’t match strides with the winner before taking the minor placing.
Last year’s winner Lankan Rupee dropped out after being prominent to the turn and jockey Craig Newitt said the sprinter ruined his chances by over-racing.
