Apprentice jockey Luke Cartwright has had a day to remember at Sandown on Saturday

The combination of trainers Peter Moody & Katherine Coleman, and three-kilogram claiming apprentice Luke Cartwright has proven to be a lethal one at Sandown Hillside.

In a three-run stint between races five and seven, the combination didn’t taste defeat.

The winning run started aboard $15 chance Suances who flew down the outside to deny race favourite Changing Colours, before a similarly fast-finishing win aboard Saban one race later.

Saban notched up his third win from fourteen starts in the Sportsbet Race Replays Handicap (1800m) at benchmark 100 level, denying a pair of former imports in Sayedaty Sadaty and Tempesti, with Katherine Coleman praising Cartwright’s confidence.

“He can be a little bit difficult, this horse,” Coleman said

“I think the fact that Luke’s had a couple of rides on him now, he’s sort of got a feel for him and he knows that he can have a tendency to want to lay in at times as well.

“But he can hit a little bit of a flat spot and you’ve got to nurse him through it. It was a lovely, confident ride from Luke today.”

The young hoop then showed his versatility and made full use of his 3kg claim aboard Roadcone, leading throughout on the $4.40 betting sites chance to run out a dominant 2-1/4 length winner in the Stow Storage Solutions Handicap (1600m) at benchmark 84 level.

“I am a bit speechless. I had a nice even book, and if they turned up, I thought, they could run a really nice race,” Cartwright said.

“And for all horses to turn up and myself give them a good ride, it means a lot.”

Able to claim down to 50/51kg aboard all three winners, Cartwright was confident he’d pinched the race aboard Roadcone in the straight.

“I knew if I held him down the dip and let him skip with 51 (kilograms), I think he was going to take some catching.

“I thought he’d quicken up very well, but he quickened up even better than well. So, no, I’m rapt.”

While also being the first metro treble for Cartwright, the trio of victories was also the first metro treble for Katherine Coleman, who officially joined Peter Moody as a co-trainer in 2023.
