Patience, the cheapest thing in racing, soon to pay off for training pair.

Still feeling the glow after the stable’s after taking out a half-million-dollar race at Gold Coast on Saturday, father and son training combination Peter and Will Hulbert are hoping a consistent maiden can break his duck at Ipswich on Wednesday.

Sir Carter provided the team with their richest success as a pairing in taking out the Magic Millions Country Cup (1200m) last weekend while Cambridge Bay won’t be racing for that sort of money on the midweek card, as deserved win is in the offing.

With three starts for as many third placings so far, the four-year-old gelding has been a work-in-progress for the Hulberts with patience being key towards the Barrier Reef Pools Maiden (1350m).

“Arguably you could have said that he should have won each of those races so far but he kept drawing poorly and we had to keep going back in the run,” Will said.

“He’s drawn a little sticky again in barrier nine but he’s had a trial and a jump out and they’ve been good enough to suggest he’s improved.

“We are expecting a forward showing tomorrow and the 1350m start is fair there so if he can be midfield or somewhere one-pair back and get cover one off the fence then he should be hard to beat.”

In each of the three outings to date, good form has come out of those races.

By Merchant Navy, the stable had to be patient to let the gelding grow into himself.

“We had one before and they are very similar,” he added.

“They take a lot of time and patience as they tend to be very soft boned horses so we had to manage him and that is while it took a bit of time to get him to the races.

“In another 12 months he’ll be winning more for his owners.”

Cambridge Bay is rated a $3.40 chance at Ipswich.

Stablemate The Hamo will head to Gatton on Sunday instead of Ipswich to take on the easier option after drawing unsuitable barriers 11 and 19 in the two races the stable accepted for with him.
