Glen Boss says Melbourne galloper Ayrton reminds him of his latest Epsom winner Kolding

Glen Boss is looking to Melbourne galloper Ayrton to provide him another big mile win at Randwick.

Having won seven Doncaster Handicaps, Boss is after a fifth win in the Epsom Handicap on October 2 having been granted permission to ride Ayrton 1kg overweight at 51kg.

Boss’ last win in the Epsom came two years ago on the Chris Waller-trained Kolding and the jockey said Ayrton reminds him a lot of that galloper.

“He’s got a similar profile as Kolding,” Boss told RSN.

“He went to Brisbane and won a stakes race as a young horse, and you could see that he was trending in the right direction.

“I love the way he goes about his business.”

After winning the Group 3 Gunsynd Classic at Eagle Farm in June, Ayrton spelled in Queensland before returning to Melbourne to win first-up at Caulfield last month.

The Mick Price and Michael Kent Jr-trained Ayrton was subsequently beaten into third place as an odds-on favourite after being trapped wide under John Allen at Flemington last Saturday.

“I thought his first-up win was very good and I thought his second-up run was better than his first, even though he got beaten,” Boss said.

“I’m pretty confident that if he was to have his time again, he would have ridden him differently.

“In a funny twist-of-fate, he would have been re-handicapped to go into the Epsom and he might have gone around with a little bit more weight.”

After Saturday’s placing, Price said Ayrton might be shaping as a 2000m horse, which Boss said would suit Ayrton fine for the Epsom.

“You want horses that will run through the line at a mile,” Boss said.

“But the weight is a big factor. Mick has a very big opinion of this fella. Mick’s a wonderful judge and has had some wonderful horses over the years.

“I think he fits the bill for mine.”
