Wrote To Arataki will have her first start in stakes company when she heads to Sandown

Wrote To Arataki heads to her first ‘black type’ assignment when she runs in the Group 3 Geoffrey Bellmaine Stakes (1300m) on Saturday.

Kah rode Wrote To Arataki in the mare’s victory at Flemington on New Year’s Day when trainer Matthew Williams issued no instructions to the jockey after drawing an awkward gate.

Again, Wrote To Arataki has drawn poorly and Williams said Kah will be given the option of making her decision when the barriers open.

“We left it to Jamie last time,” Williams said.

“I didn’t see her leading and I think she (Jamie) was of the opinion the mare would be better ridden just behind the speed.

“She’s drawn out again, so there will be no instructions. It will be all up to Jamie once the gates open.”

It will be five weeks between runs for Wrote To Arataki after Williams tossed up heading back to Flemington for a 1400m benchmark 78 race on January 14 or giving Wrote To Arataki a freshen.

“In the end we thought she was fit, so we backed off her for a week in a little spelling paddock and decided to come back to the 1300 metres of this race,” Williams said.

“We thought it was a good chance for her to have a crack at some ‘black type’ and be one of the fitter horses in the race, thinking there would be a few mares resuming.

“And it won’t worry us what condition the track is. She’s won of good, she’s won on slow, and she’s won on heavy.”

Williams has long harboured stakes company for Wrote To Arataki right from the time she was successful at Sandown last June.

That day Williams said Wrote To Arataki flew home, running strong sectionals, which suggested she may get to a higher grade.

But it is only this campaign that the mare is starting to put it together and see out a preparation.

“She was one that was hard to hold condition on when she got into a racing prep, but she’s certainly much better in that area now,” Williams said.

“She’s matured a bit more and hopefully now we can land a bit of black type for her.”
