Jockey Billy Egan underwent his second surgery on Monday following his heavy fall from Tagomago in the ninth and final race at Pakenham on Friday.
Although X-rays cleared Egan of any fractures (there was initial concern about that possibility straight after the fall), as reported on Racing.com, he was then diagnosed with compartment syndrome which led to him having surgery on Saturday.
Further surgery was then required to treat nerve and ligament damage.
“He’s had another surgery on Monday, he’s been in quite a bit of discomfort,” VJA boss Matt Hyland told Racing.com.
“We are confident the surgery will aid his recovery.
“Post this latest surgery we will then be in a better position to assess his recovery time.”
The relevant extract from Friday’s Stewards’ Report from the Pakenham meeting reads:
‘Tagomago: Shifted from behind Tallandoon passing the 500 metres, approaching the 400 metres, when close to that geldings heels faltered and dislodged rider Billy Egan. The Ballet Dancer, Jolting and Look Sharpish, which were following, were hampered in consequence. B Egan received medical treatment and was transported via ambulance to hospital for further assessment. Stewards adjourned an inquiry into the reason for Billy Egan being dislodged. Evidence was taken from Daniel Stackhouse (Tallandoon) and Robbie Downey (The Ballet Dancer).’
