A Racing NSW stewards’ inquiry into alleged contact between jockey Tommy Berry and disqualified trainer John O’Shea will be conducted on Thursday, with investigators set to examine telephone communication between the pair.

O’Shea is currently serving a four-month disqualification imposed earlier this year following an incident involving the verbal abuse of a veterinarian.

During his suspension, co-trainer Tom Charlton has assumed sole responsibility for the operation of the stable.

The matter arose after Hovland, prepared by Charlton, won at Warwick Farm at last week’s midweek meeting.

In a post-race interview with Sky Racing, Berry revealed he had spoken with both Charlton and O’Shea on the morning of the race, prompting stewards to commence an investigation.

Racing NSW officials have since interviewed Berry, Charlton and O’Shea as part of their inquiries.

Reports also indicate apprentice jockey Anna Roper was escorted to her vehicle during the race meeting so stewards could access her mobile phone and review relevant call records.

Under the Australian Rules of Racing, disqualified persons are prohibited from associating with licensed participants in circumstances connected to racing activities and remain subject to racing regulations throughout their period of disqualification.

The matter highlights Racing NSW’s strict approach to enforcing the conditions attached to suspensions and disqualifications.

A recent example involved former Scone trainer Stephen Jones, whose three-and-a-half-year disqualification was effectively restarted after he attended the Magic Millions sales complex in June 2025 without prior approval from Racing NSW.

As a result, Jones’ disqualification, which had originally been due to expire in 2027, was extended until December 2028.

The outcome of Thursday’s inquiry could have significant implications depending on the nature and extent of any contact established between Berry and O’Shea.
