History-making Brisbane jockey Angela Jones is set to miss the entire Queensland winter carnival after suffering a broken collarbone in a heavy fall at the Doomben trials.
Jones was dislodged from Tony Gollan’s mare Deep Vegas when the horse stumbled during a 1000m trial on Thursday morning, sending the leading rider crashing to the turf.
She was transported to hospital with suspected concussion and a collarbone injury, with scans later confirming a fracture that will require surgery.
Jones has since been released from hospital and is expected to consult a specialist on Friday, but recovery timelines suggest a lengthy stint on the sidelines.
With most adults requiring up to three months to return to normal activity following collarbone surgery, the injury is likely to rule her out for the remainder of the Queensland winter carnival.
The talented rider had been booked for seven rides at the Gold Coast on Hollindale Stakes day, but those mounts have now been reassigned.
Jones made headlines last season when she became the first female jockey to win the Brisbane jockeys’ premiership, and she had again been in strong form, sitting third in this season’s standings behind Ben Thompson and Ryan Maloney.
Her partner, fellow jockey Kyle Wilson-Taylor, described her as “tough as anything” and backed her to return strongly from the setback.
