Again, it’s the royal blue of Godolphin that opens the Sydney Everest Carnival, and its Anamoe who’s the $2.10 Ladbrokes favourite for the Fijutsu General George Main Stakes.
Already launching the Sydney Spring with a ‘workable’ 1½ length victory in the Winx Stakes, Anamoe was first up from a 19 week spell in this the first Group 1 of this new 2022-2023 season.
To be again ridden by champion James McDonald for James Cummings, he’ll jump from Gate 8 of 10 runners over 1600m, and carrying 58.5kg at WFA, he’s won 8 of 17 starts and over $5.23m.
Now a Group 1 winner at 2, 3 and 4 years, he won the Inglis Sires’ and Todman Stakes, plus second in the Golden Slipper at two years, before claiming the Caulfield Guineas as an early 3yo.
In also winning the Run to The Rose and a ‘head’ second in the Golden Rose early at three, he was courageous in being a ‘nose’ to the Saratoga Derby winner State of Rest in the Cox Plate.
Returning in the Autumn, Anamoe took out the Hobartville Stakes, then a ‘long neck’ second in the Randwick Guineas, followed by a 6¾ length victory in the Rosehill Guineas over 2000m.
In being Champion 3YO and home bred by Godolphin, he’s by top-line sprinter Street Boss, and is half-brother to Drum and the dam of Grand Armee, from Australasian Oaks winner Anamato.
However, bookmakers have posted the All-Star Mile winner Zaaki at $3.10 for Annabel Neasham having won the Tramway first-up, with the Winx Stakes second placed Fangirl at $9.50.
In an exceptional George Main Stakes Day it’s the World Best Sprinter in Nature Strip who’s $2.25 for ‘royal’ trainer Chris Waller, and in a field resembling The Everest its Eduardo at $4.
Again, it’s the Tea Rose Stakes that can finalise the highly competitive Darley Flight Series, and it’s Silver Shadow Stakes winning 3yo filly Zougotcha whose $2.70 favourite for Chris Waller.
At $5 is Series leader North Star Lass for Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott, having won the Furious Stakes and third in the Silver Shadow Stakes, with the Flight Stakes run on TAB Epsom Day.
With this Sydney Everest Carnival boasting $66.3m in prizemoney and featuring six Group 1 and 31 black type races, the ATC boasts it’s a ‘most anticipated event on the world racing stage.’
Featuring the world’s richest turf race the $15m TAB Everest at Royal Randwick on 15 October, it’s the $10m Golden Eagle on 29 October and the new $2m The Big Dance on Cup Day, 1 November.

In recently being elected unanimously as the Chairman of the Australian Turf Club, the highly experienced racing administrator Peter McGauran having joined the Board in February.
Previously as Chief Executive of Racing Australia from 2012 to 2016, he also held senior racing industry roles at Thoroughbred Breeders Australia, Aushorse Marketing, Racing NSW and TABCORP.
Peter McGauran served 25 years as Member for Gippsland in the Federal Parliament, and was the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries in the Howard Government until retirement in 2008.
Growing-up in rural Gippsland, Peter went onto win three races in a single Victoria Amateur Racing season, and later Stipendiary Steward duties between Legal studies at Melbourne University.
