Albury Cup gets a new date

The Albury Racing Club has secured a new date for its prestigious Albury Gold Cup meeting, which was postponed due to heavy rainfall last week. The highly anticipated event will now take place on Thursday, April 17, just in time for racegoers to kick off the Easter holiday weekend.

Despite the rescheduling, the Albury Gold Cup will maintain its position as the Border region’s richest race, boasting an impressive $200,000 in prize money. However, other key races on the program, including the Flat Knacker and the Albury Guineas, will see a reduction in stakes.

Unfortunately, the Adrian Ledger Memorial will not be contested on the rescheduled date, but officials are committed to finding an alternative slot for the event later in the year.

The original race meeting, set for last Friday, was abandoned after 40mm of rainfall in just 24 hours left the track unsuitable for racing. The washout also meant that Albury’s biggest social event didn’t take place at the racecourse, but thousands of punters still turned out to local pubs and clubs, ensuring a booming trade in the city.

Albury Racing Club CEO Steve Hetherton acknowledged the difficulty of securing a new date but expressed his appreciation for Racing NSW stepping in to help.

“Racing NSW has been tremendous in finding a suitable date, and we now get to stage our cup meeting in the lead-up to Easter on Thursday, April 17,” Hetherton said.

“We realise it’s an unenviable task trying to find another date because it’s not easy, and you have to consider the impact having another meeting has on other clubs. Especially Wagga, which races on Sunday, April 13, an important lead-up meeting to their Wagga Gold Cup Carnival in early May.”

While some races will go ahead with adjusted stakes, the Adrian Ledger Memorial will not be held on the new date. However, Hetherton assured racing fans that the club is committed to finding the right time to stage the race later in the year.

“Unfortunately, the Adrian Ledger Memorial is one feature race that we won’t be able to run on the new date. However, we will find a suitable date to run the race later in the year because of its significance and how passionate we are about honoring Adrian and his family, who have supported the club for such a long period of time.”

With a new date secured, racing fans can now look forward to an exciting day of racing action at Albury, headlined by the Commercial Club Albury Gold Cup. The event is expected to attract strong fields and plenty of interest from punters, setting the stage for an electrifying lead-up to Easter weekend.
