Agreeable has overcome a difficult passage to score a first-up win at Sandown

Agreeable has supplied a bit of light on a dark time for the Freedman family with her first-up victory at Sandown.

Trainers Lee, Anthony, Richard and Michael Freedman are mourning the death of their mother Del who passed away on Friday.

Agreeable is trained by father-and-son partners Anthony and Sam Freedman and took out the Ladbrokes Split Multi Handicap (1300m) on Saturday in a stylish first-up win.

Rod Douglas, the racing manager for Pinecliff Racing’s Jonathan Munz, the owner of Agreeable, said he hoped the mare’s victory gave the Freedman family something to smile about.

“The Freedmans have had a bit of devastation this week with Anthony and the boys’ mum passing away yesterday,” Douglas said.

“It’s a bit of a sombre time for them but hopefully this puts a cheer on their face.”

Ridden by apprentice Matthew Cartwright, Agreeable ($7) weaved a passage through the field to score a short neck win over Saigon ($16) with the $4 favourite Commands The Field a neck away third.

Douglas said Agreeable had been turned out in excellent order for her first-up assignment.

“You knew she was fit as she doesn’t get fat as she’s one of those lean type of fillies,” Douglas said.

“She’ll push on now and hopefully she can get some ‘black type’ at some stage.”

Cartwright said he was in a tricky spot aboard Agreeable while also commenting the four-year-old is possibly not as effective on wet ground as she is on a drier track.

“I just had a few horses come around me and I had a few horses in front of me that weren’t going to take me into the race,” Cartwright said.

“I just had to wait, but I got the run, she let down well and she’ll improve a lot out of it as well.”
