A prize money and bonus pool exceeding $5 million will underpin this year’s Northern Queensland Winter Racing Carnival, headlined by a lucrative new incentive aimed at attracting the state’s top gallopers.
The inaugural Great Northern Crowns Bonus will offer $500,000 to any horse capable of sweeping all four major Cups staged across Rockhampton, Mackay, Townsville and Cairns.
Sprinters are also well catered for, with another $500,000 bonus available for winning the four feature sprint races at those same venues, while a $250,000 reward is on offer for any horse that can claim three of the four events in either category.
Northern regional representative Scott Riordan said the scale of the initiative highlights the growing significance of the carnival.
“This shows how seriously the industry is investing in Northern racing,” Riordan said. “It’s a huge opportunity for participants across Central and North Queensland, and it puts our clubs firmly in the spotlight during the winter months.”
The two-month carnival kicks off at Rockhampton’s Callaghan Park on July 9 and concludes with the Cairns Cup meeting on August 29.
Leading trainer Stephen Massingham believes the new bonus structure will have a direct impact on how stables map out their campaigns.
“These incentives definitely make you think differently about where you place your horses,” Massingham said. “If you’ve got a horse that’s versatile and travelling well, the rewards are significant.”
Top jockeys are also expected to feature prominently throughout the series, including multiple Group 1 winner William Pike, who is set to ride during the Cairns Super Carnival.
With more than $4 million in prize money and bonuses distributed across the four key venues, the Northern Queensland Winter Racing Carnival continues to strengthen its status as one of the state’s premier racing showcases.
