Do you come from a horse/racing family?
My younger brother Josh was a jockey and is now a trainer. He was the first one in the family to get into racing.
Did you always want to be a jockey?
Not at all! I went to uni after finishing school to study accounting for a couple of years and learned to ride trackwork during that time to earn some extra money. First time I did evens I knew I wanted a change in career.
What is your first racing memory?
Strapping my first winner at the races; Back To The Bar trained by Kym Davison.
Who is your favourite horse and why?
Kartem Around Boy, he was trained by Greg Webb at Geelong. I won four races on him including one as a 4kg claimer at 150-1.
Who is the best horse you’ve ridden?
Raceday probably Jungle Edge.
And the best horse you have seen?
Winx.
Your favourite racing moment?
Canβt go past riding your first winner.
Best ride of another jockey you have seen?
Recent one that I can think of is Jamie Melham on Half Yours in the Melbourne Cup.
Is there a ride you wish you could do again?
Thereβs plenty but hard to pick a particular one. Thatβs the great thing about racing – that there is always another race.
Which horse from the past would you love to have ridden?
Black Caviar.
Do you think horses know they have won?
Yes, some show it more than others though.
If you time travel into a past racing moment what would it be?
The Phar Lap era.
Who do you admire most in racing?
The stablehands who work relentlessly behind the scenes and the barrier attendants – they make our job a lot easier.
What is one change/improvement you’d love to see in racing?
A reduction in negative comments towards jockeys/trainers on social media.
What is your favourite T.V show?
Clarkson’s Farm.
Best concert you’ve seen?
Hilltop Hoods.
What slogan summarizes your outlook on life?
The harder you work the luckier you get.
