The 153rd Melbourne Cup Carnival takes place this Tuesday, November the 5th, 2013. “The race that stops a nation” seems to get bigger and bigger each year, with this one event managing to capture the imagination of the entire country. With $6.2 million up for grabs and a chance for the winner to cement their name in the history books, the Melbourne Cup is the most highly anticipated event in Australian horse racing.

The Melbourne Cup does not stand alone, however, with ten races hosted on Emirates Melbourne Cup Day and a multitude of other attractions to keep everyone happy. The Myer Fashions on the Field competition is held on the east end of the front lawn, with other attractions including Hill Square Entertainment, the Nova Dome, the Swisse Wellness Spa, and the My Kitchen Rules Laneway.

The first race takes place at 10.20am, with the Melbourne Cup itself run at 3.00pm and the last race run at 5.15pm. While Melbourne Cup Day might not have as many high profile Group 1 races as Victoria Derby Day a few days before, the Group 3 7News Stakes and Group 3 Lavazza Short Black are hosted on the day along with three Listed events.
