The William Reid Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield this Saturday looks a high-quality sprint where one horse clearly sets the standard, with Jimmysstar bringing dominant form and strong market support into the race. While there is depth through a number of on-speed runners and proven performers, the race appears to revolve around whether anything can match the favourite at his best.
Jimmysstar comes into this off a series of outstanding performances and profiles as the horse to beat, while Jigsaw looks the main danger likely to control the tempo out in front. Magic Time adds intrigue first up with her dynamic fresh record, while runners like Benedetta and Rey Magnerio provide depth for the exotics. With pressure expected up front and a genuine tempo likely, it shapes as a race where the class runner holds a clear edge but there are still opportunities around the minor placings.
Down below is a speed map, runner preview and $100 betting strategy for the 2026 William Reid Stakes.
2026 William Reid Stakes Runner Preview:
1. Jimmysstar: Jimmysstar is the bet of the Autumn for me. There are horses who do get better with age and racing, and this guy fits that criteria. I can make a good case that if he drew well in The Everest, he could have given Ka Ying Rising an almighty scare. He made amends for that with arrogant wins in the Russell Balding and CF Orr. He’s the best sprinter we’ve got in Australia and my goodness his jumpout work has been electrifying.
2. Jigsaw: Jigsaw is absolutely humming for Cindy Alderson and will give Jimmy a run for his money. He was arrogant last Saturday at this track/distance, leading throughout and he gave nothing else a look in. Looks the leader once again and will take running down.
3. Rey Magnerio: Ripping campaigner that resumes for Robbie Griffiths. Very reliable on the fresh side, won The Gold Rush at Ascot last run last prep and has eyes on The Quokka…couldn’t back him to win but a must for exotics.
4. Angel Capital: Happy to die on the hill when saying he is the most overrated horse in the country. Given every possible in the Newmarket and yes, held up, but he had his chance. If he wins, too good, but he should be double/triple his price.
5. Baraqiel: Had a setback pre Newmarket and was scratched. Tick over jumpout was encouraging, he’ll press forward and run well…just don’t think he has the class of Jimmysstar.
6. Airman: He’s not a Group l horse. Never was, never will be.
7. Tropicus: Terrible Oakleigh Plate field but he smashed them and the ratings boys and girls say he went through the roof in winning. But, 1200m at WFA with more front end pressure this time around…not for me.
8. Magic Time: Magic Time is a class mare for Grahame Begg that resumes. 1200m is on the short side for her but she is so dynamic on the fresh side and loved the way she closed off in a recent jumpout. She’ll be strong late. Just depends what start she concedes.
9. Charm Stone: Does she have signs of life or is she cast. Manikato winner that resumes off encouraging jumpout work and the noise out of the stable is that she’s in good order for the return…first four at best.
10. Benedetta: Unlucky in the Lightning before a midfield effort in the Newmarket where she kept chasing but the pattern was against. She’ll be honest again, but I have a few others ahead of her.
11. Devil Night: Didn’t do a bad job behind Pallaton but he’s not up to these.

2026 William Reid Stakes Speed Map
Jigsaw should spear across from the wide gate and lead, and sitting near him will be Baraqiel. Devil Night and Tropicus will settle handy as well. Jimmysstar…I think he can use the inside gate to advantage but there is a chance he could get shuffled back.
