Soul Choice comes back from a fruitful Tassie prep and looks the likely leader despite drawing wide. Pavitra will be handy, and drawn soft, expect Papillon Club will be in the first few like she was in the Kewney. Prowess sat outside the speed last time at Pukekohe and should lob into a lovely spot.

2023 Vinery Stud Stakes Runner Preview:

1 Prowess: Prowess is a ripping filly from NZ who has the runs on the board in terms of beating the older horses. That came last start at Pukekohe in the New Zealand Stakes where she was there to be run down but gee she found under pressure and despite doing a bit wrong late, she was strong to the line in winning. Has a win over star filly Legarto, proven at the trip, class…clearly hard to beat.

2 Fireburn: I am really surprised she is single figures. Had the pattern in her corner in the Phar Lap last time and battled late behind Zougotcha. That race has been a good form reference for this in recent years, but she is a filly that is just in the middle of nowhere IMO. Can’t entertain her.

3 Pavitra: I just can’t see Pavitra getting beat. Her Kembla Grange Classic win was just arrogant, the way she put the race to bed in a matter of strides and just got stronger as the race went on. That was 1600m and off that, the rise to 2000m here looks perfect. As a whole, this isn’t a strong race, so I am really keen on her prospects. Think she’s the best on the program.

4 Polygon: To me, the stable have eyes on the Oaks. Kembla Grange Classic run was just fair, only getting warm very late in the piece. To my eye, she was quite dour and with that in mind, happy to let her go around with me, but I will be watching with an eye towards the Oaks.

5 Papillon Club: If this becomes a sit/sprint, she has the turn of foot to be dangerous. Brave effort in the Kewney, only getting nabbed late by Revolutionary Miss. The 2000m is the query but a soft gate and hopefully a gentle tempo can help her cause.

6 Soul Choice: She has the current runs on the board given the fruitful prep in Tassie, winning the Strutt Stakes followed by the Tassie Oaks. Has residual fitness, she’ll slide forward and dangerous if this track is playing towards those on speed.

7 Pierossa: Pierossa is racing like a rise in trip will suit. Did more than enough fresh here behind subsequent Rosehill Guineas winner Lindermann. She then went to the Kembla Grange Classic and was good from off the speed but was never a threat to Pavitra, running a four length third. I think getting to 2000m is a plus…whether she is good enough to beat Pavitra, I am not too sure.

8 Call Di: 2000m is the query with her based on the Kembla Grange Classic. She was there to win at the top of the straight but had no answers late for Pavitra and on the line was comfortably. Can’t see her turning the tables.

9 So Dazzling: Back on track maybe? Solid second in the Kembla Grange Classic but was safely held by Pavitra and she is a filly who can be hit and miss. Hard to trust and while 2000m is fine for her, just not sure she has the quality.

10 Byron Belle: Nice filly, but this isn’t her level.

11 Infinitive: Could be the Oaks filly for Chris Waller. Strong winner two back over 1900m before coming back to the mile in the Kembla Grange Classic and was very good to the line without threatening. She’ll be strong late, but keep an eye on her looking towards the Oaks.

12 Frankie’s Me Dad: I reckon $51+ for her in the Oaks could be worth having something small on. She isn’t the most brilliant filly, but in terms of staying prowess, she is much better than a $51 chance. As to this race, she hasn’t got the change up speed, but if it becomes a slog, she’ll be strong late.

13 Whisky Wisdom: She is a filly I have time for but I just don’t think she’s up to this grade.

14 Stormy Witness: Danny Williams has to realise that Shelby Sixtysix was a one off and won’t be done again from his stable. This girl is unders at $301.
