RANDWICK

RACE ONE

Dawn Passage ($8.50) powered to the line under the guidance of the returning Blake Shinn to take out the Australian Turf Club Handicap (1000 metres).

Settling a little worse than midfield, Shinn produced the son of Dawn Approach at the top of the straight and he sprinted sharply, putting paid to the leaders midway down the running before powering to an impressive win.

Aussie ($5.50) and Bivouac ($14) finished in the placings but the big disappointment was the favourite, Espaaniyah ($2.40-$3.20).

Drifting alarmingly in the final stages of betting, the Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott runner had to work from the inside draw to lead and although straightening up in front, was a spent force soon after.

Espaaniyah was easily the most popular runner with 55 percent of the market on the filly. Dawn Passage held just 10 percent of what the favourite did.

Of the others, there was a push for Sylvia’s Memory which opened at $51 on Wednsday and today, was $26-$8.

BETS: Dawn Passage $2,000 @ $8.50

BETS: Espaaniyah $1,188 @ $3.20, $1,000 @ $3.20, $2,000 @ $2.90 MULTIPLE TIMES, $4,000 @ $2.80, $1,000 @ $2.80, $2,000 @ $2.70, $1,200 @ $2.50, $1,000 x $2,000 e/w @ $2.50/$1.40, $2,640 @ $2.40, $2,000 @ $2.40.

RACE TWO

The money was spot on with in the TAB Highway Handicap (1100 metres) with the big firmer in I Am A Cool Kid saluting.

TAB had the Gayna Williams-trained gelding as a $6 chance in the morning but solid support throughout the day saw it crunched in to $3.30, making it second pick behind easing favourite Shes Spicy ($2.60-$3.20).

Adam Hyeronimus speared the six-year-old out of the gates and the pair never looked in danger of defeat, leading throughout to score comfortably over I Am Capitan ($9.50) and Zardoro ($23).

BETS: I Am A Cool Kid $2,000 @ $4.20, $1,800 @ $3.40, $1,500 @ $3.30, $1,400 @ $3.20

RACE THREE

Sylvia’s Mother defied a late drift in betting to score an ultra impressive win in the 2019 Membership Handicap (1100 metres).

The daughter of Snitzel was $2.30 on Wednesday and the first horse backed when markets opened, firming in to a price of $1.70 on Saturday morning. The Team Hawkes runner blew in betting late though and jumped a $2.10 favourite over Star Fall ($2.40), which had been the initial favourite on Wednesday.

Struggling to find room until halfway down the straight, jockey Brenton Avdulla peeled around heels before Sylvia’s Mother sprinted sharply to score over Wonderbabe ($13). Exceltic ($19) ran third while Star Fall, which raced outside the leader, faded to just miss the placings.

Punters had it as a race in two with Syvlias Mother and Star Fall accounting for 87 percent of the total investment.

BETS: Sylvia’s Mother $3,000 @ $2.10 TWICE, $6,000 @ $2, $2,000 @ $2, $1,750 @ $2

RACE FOUR

Luskintyre Lass wasn’t anywhere near as favoured as Toryjoy for the running of the Summer Racing Handicap (1600 metres).

The Waterhouse/Bott runner bottomed out at $3.80 before getting out to $4.60 at the jump, which is the price it was earlier this morning. On the flip side, Toryjoy ($2.40) held more than three times what Luskintyre Lass did.

Despite the weight of money being on the favourite, Luskintyre Lass sat outside it and proved way too good over the concluding stages as she raced away to beat Pumpkin Pie ($13) and Toryjoy.

Such was the heavy support for Toryjoy that she held over half the total investment.

BETS: Luskintyre Lass $1,000 @ $4.60

BETS: Toryjoy $8,000 @ $2.40, $3,160 @ $2.40, $3,000 @ $2.40 TWICE, $2,084 @ $2.40, $2,000 @ $3.40 MULTIPLE TIMES, $30,000 @ $1.30 PLACE

BETS: Pumpkin Pie $1,000 @ $13

RACE FIVE

Rachel King pulled off the ride of the day with mercurial Lad in the Happy 19th Birthday Tom Norris Handicap (2000 metres).

King let the son of Pendragon run and as a result, put a gap between her and the rest of the field which proved too much for them to overcome.

Mercurial Lad ($18-$15) went on to beat Island Missile ($4.40) and Berdibek ($11-$6.50-$5.50-$7) while the favourite So You Win ($1.85-$2.20) wasn’t far off in fourth.

So You Win was easily the best tried and held more than three times as much as the next best backed runner (Berdibek).

BETS: So You Win $9,800 @ $2.25, $5,000 @ $2.25, $2,000 @ $2.25, $1,000 @ $2.25 MULTIPLE TIMES

BETS: Berdibek $2,000 @ $7, $2,000 @ $6.50

RACE SIX

Most of the support here was with Sei Stella ($2.60) to win the TAB.com.au Handicap (1100 metres).

The Matty Dale-trained runner held 43 percent of the total investment but was forced to do a power of work outside the leader, Happy Mo ($34).

Overpowering the frontrunner just after straightening, Sei Stella couldn’t repel Junglized ($6-$4.60) which had the drop on it. Oriental Runner ($11-$13) ran on nicely to finish in the minor end of the money.

Sei Stella was easily the best tried in the race in front of Taniko ($3.70), with Junglized next best.

BETS: Junglized $1,000 @ $6.50, $1,000 @ $6, $1,000 @ $5, $1,000 @ $4.60

BETS: Sei Stella $2,000 @ $2.60, $1,000 @ $2.60, $1,334 @ $2.50, $2,520 @ $2.40, $2,500 @ $2.40, $2,000 @ $2.40

RACE SEVEN

Tom Melbourne finally broke his losing drought with an impressive victory in the Carrington Stakes (1400 metres).

Sent out at $5, the Chris Waller runner exploded in the straight when let loose by jockey Blake Shinn, overhauling the well-tried leader Flow to score in fine style.

Flow, which held favouritism briefly, went $4.80-$3.90-$4.20 and held second while Tangled ($26) worked home nicely to finish third.

Endless Drama was sent out $3.70 favourite after being back from $4.60 in the morning, however, his race was done at the start after missing the jump.

Flow held approximately one-third of the money in the race while Endless Drama wasn’t far behind in the popularity stakes. Penske was third pick in that regard and Tom Melbourne was next best.

BETS: Tom Melbourne $1,000 @ $6, $1,000 @ $5

BETS: Flow $1,000 @ $4.20 MULTIPLE TIMES, $3,000 @ $4, $2,500 @ $4, $2,000 e/w @ $4/$1.60, $1,000 @ $4 TWICE, $3,000 @ $3.90, $2,000 @ $3.90

BETS: Endless Drama $3,000 @ $4.40, $2,000 @ $4.20, $1,500 @ $3.70

RACE EIGHT

Dealmaker was sensationally backed into favouritism for the #theraces Handicap (1400 metres).

The Chris Waller runner was $4.20 in the morning and such was the weight of money in his favour, he ended up jumping a $3 favourite. He overtook Sondelon ($2.80-$3.30) at the head of betting.

Hugh Bowman was searching desperately for a run in the straight and found it just a little too late, with the colt diving late but unable to nail Brazen ($81) which just held on.

Sondelon held third.

Of the others, Reckless Choice ($8) attracted good eachway money throughout the day and was best tried outside of the top two in the market.

BETS: Dealmaker $2,000 @ $3.50, $2,000 @ $3.40, $1,500 @ $3.40, $16,000 @ $1.50 PLACE

BETS: Sondelon $2,000 @ $3.20, $3,000 @ $3.20

RACE NINE

New Universe landed a good move after he charged down the Randwick straight to win the Rise Up At The Championships Handicap (1600 metres).

The Chris Waller-trained gelding pulled off a similar feat to his stablemate Tom Melbourne earlier, however, New Universe was a notable firmer having been $10 in the morning.

He jumped a $5 chance after good consistent support throughout the afternoon.

Organza ($2.90-$3.40), which went around as the most popular runner in terms of money taken, charged home but couldn’t match the finishing burst of the winner.

Gresham ($3.70) always has support whenever it goes around and today was no different. After racing up on the speed, he battled on well for third.

Of the others, the move for Eagle Bay ($12-$9.50), which began earlier in the week when $41 was on offer, came unstuck after the gelding was planted three-wide the trip.

BETS: New Universe $1,000 e/w @ $5.50/$1.90, $1,000 @ $5.50

BETS: Organza $6,775 @ $3.40, $2,000 @ $3.40 TWICE, $4,000 @ $3.30

BETS: Gresham $3,000 @ $4, $4,000 @ $3.70, $2,250 @ $3.70

CAULFIELD

RACE ONE

Favourite backers had some nervous moments but in the end one of the best backed runners across the country got the money.

Crack The Code ($1.80) was hammered in betting but jockey Damien Oliver couldn’t find a spot so the pair were forced to race three-wide throughout in the Cape Grim Beef Plate (1100 metres).

In the end, she overhauled the leader News Girl ($14) in the shadows of the post to score a popular win with TAB customers. Embrace Me ($7.50) filled the minor end of the prize.

Crack The Code commanded a whopping 83 percent of the total investment. The I Am Invincible filly held more than 12 times the amount of money than anything else in the event.

BETS: Crack The Code $6,500 @ $1.80, $3,500 @ $1.80, $2,100 @ $1.80, $2,000 @ $1.80 MULTIPLE TIMES, $1,000 @ $1.80 MULTIPLE TIMES, $19,800 @ $1.28 PLACE

RACE TWO

Miss Norway did the right thing by favourite backers when leading throughout in The Mary Bell (1100 metres).

Going straight to the front for jockey Luke Currie, Miss Norway was rated to perfection as she held off Queen Annabel and Bellaria.

The John Sadler-trained runner went around as the most popular horse in the race, with about 45 percent of the market on the winner. She was twice as popular as Tiara Star ($4.20) which was best tried of the others.

BETS: Miss Norway $1,000 @ $2.80, $1,000 @ $2.50

RACE THREE

There was money around to suggest that Critical Thinking would run a huge race in the Le Pine Funerals Handicap (1400 metres).

Opening the day at $11, good support at the eachway quote saw it eventually start a $6.50 chance – good for a spot on the third line of betting behind Groundbreak ($2.50-$3.70), Indian Thunder, Jesta Dreama and Ocean Deep who were all at $6.

Finding the front with Michael Walker, the gelding had to respond after being seriously tested by Simply Invincible ($31) which sat outside it for most of the trip.

Eventually it was a narrow margin to Critical Thinking which kicked back over the final 100 metres to score. Indian Thunder ran home nicely for third just in front of the favourite Groundbreak which didn’t have the best of luck in the straight.

RACE FOUR

The best supported runner in the race led throughout to win the Blue Diamond Preview for the Colts & Geldings (1000 metres).

I Am Immortal was one of the first horses backed in the race when markets opened earlier in the week. At that point, $6 was on offer and some serious money began to flow for the Anthony Freedman runner.

Today, he was $4.60 but was absolutely smashed in the final 10 minutes of betting, to the point where he was backed in to $3.60 favouritism. The push for I Am Immortal saw Microphone go from $3.30 out to $3.80 second pick.

Jockey Ben Melham pushed forward at the start and found the front and that was the end of the section, with the pair proving too strong for Microphone which sat outside it the whole way.

Alburq ($10-$6.50), a notable firmer from $16 on Wednesday, ran on to be close up in third.

I Am Immortal was the most popular runner in front of Microphone, while there was also good money for Auxin ($5), Exeter ($17-$9.50-$10) and Lodestar ($18).

BETS: I Am Immortal $2,500 @ $3.90 TWICE, $2,500 @ $3.60 MULTIPLE TIMES, $2,000 @ $3.60, $1,000 @ $3.60 MULTIPLE TIMES

BETS: Lodestar $2,000 @ $18

BETS: Microphone $2,000 @ $3.80, $2,500 @ $3.30

BETS: Exeter $1,000 @ $14, $1,000 @ $11, $3,000 @ $10

RACE FIVE

Catch Me proved too strong in the Fillies Previews of the Blue Diamond (1000 metres).

Sitting three-wide the trip, the Team Snowden runner overhauled the leaders and raced to an impressive win despite being a drifter in betting.

Catch Me had been $3.80 in the morning but got out to $4.40, which put it second pick in the market behind the sensationally supported Jedastar ($4.80-$3.80) which had been $13 on Wednesday.

Jedastar led and held on well for second hwile Shih Tzou ($10) ran on from the back to grab third. Of the others, Pretty Brazen ($8-$6.50) had attracted really good eachway money throughout the day with only Catch Me and Jedastar holding more. Anaheed ($5.50) also had admirers.

BETS: Catch Me $3,000 @ $4.40, $2,000 @ $3.80, $1,500 @ $3.70, $30,000 @ $1.70 PLACE

BETS: Jedastar $3,325 @ $4

RACE SIX

Favourite backers had no cause for concern despite Social Spin sitting three-wide for the duration of the Catanach’s Jewellers Handicap (1400 metres).

The Darren Weir runner was stuck three-wide as a $2.05 favourite but managed to replicate Crack The Code and Catch Me, who also did the hard yards out wide but proved too good.

Social Spin went on to land some big bets in beating Starouz ($16) and Magnossiva ($14) despite drifting slightly from $1.90 in the morning.

The son of Toorak Toff held 66 percent of the total investment and was very popular through multis as well.

Goldifox ($4.60-$3.50) was best tried to beat the favourite but couldn’t pick up in the straight after coming down the middle of the track.

BETS: Social Spin $9,000 @ $2.05, $4,000 @ $2.05, $3,000 @ $2.05 TWICE, $2,500 @ $2.05, $2,000 @ $2.05 MULTIPLE TIMES, $2,000 @ $2 MULTIPLE TIMES

RACE SEVEN

Tarquin caused a minor boilover when it held off the finish of Al Galayel in the seventh event on the card.

Ridden a treat by Fred Kersley, he came off the fence to sit in the running line approaching the home bend before coming three-wide to issue his challenge. This move by the $10 shot proved a winning one as Al Galayel had to come four-wide but couldn’t quite make up the ground.

Bondeiger ($34) flashed home to run third.

Al Galaywel ($2.50) jumped favourite and held twice as much as any other runner, with Lamborghini ($4.80) the only one seriously tried to beat it. Of the others, Kiwia ($7) had some eachway money come for it.

RACE EIGHT

Silentz landed big blow to TAB when it was successful in the eighth event on the card over 1700 metres.

Well supported throughout the week, the Darren Weir runner was red figures for most of the day and jumped a dominant $1.90 favourite.

Given a good run close to the speed, Dean Yendall pulled out approaching the home bend and the horse did the rest, overpowering the leaders and then holding off the swoopers to deliver a massive six-figure loss to TAB.

The son of Snitzel held over 80 percent of the market and was heavily leveraged through multis.

BETS: Silentz $10,000 @ $1.90, $4,000 @ $1.90, $3,000 @ $1.90, $2,700 @ $1.90

RACE NINE

Rock ‘N’ Gold saved the TAB from a losing result in the John Dillon Stakes (1400 metres).

The eight-year-old was sent out an $18 chance and wasn’t really fancied despite having some specking at the eachway quote. Most punters were with Manolo Blahniq ($4.40-$2.80) which was one of the best backed runner on the card.

While Damian Lane was out in front dictating terms, Dwayne Dunn got lost on the favourite four back the inside and by the time he found clear room midway down the running, Rock ‘N’ Gold was off and gone.

Chamois Road filled third at $21.

BETS: Rock ‘N’ Gold $1,000 @ $15

BETS: Manolo Blahniq $2,000 @ $3.80, $1,000 @ $3.80, $3,000 @ $2.80, $2,500 @ $2.80, $2,000 @ $2.80 MULTIPLE TIMES
