The curtain-raiser to the Group 1 races is the Phar Lap Stakes for 3yo’s. A tricky race for punters with only one of the entrants in the race having had secured a victory from their past two outings. This is reflected in the market with eight of the eleven runners at odds of less than $15.00.

1. ALBRECHT – (11)
Won the G3 Up and Coming last year but in three runs in this campaign, has failed to fire a shot. He finished tenth of sixteen in the Australian Guineas behind Ferlax at his most recent start and will have to find that Up and Coming form if he is to overcome the outside gate here.
Odds: $5.50
2. ASHOKAN – J Bowman (9)
Only the one win from eleven starts for this son of More Than Ready but has been not that far away in some of the premier 3yo races. Tried hard on the heavy track behind Pierro in the Hobartville two starts back before going within ¾ of a length of registering his second win in the Canberra Guineas last start. Finds the right kind of race here.
Odds: $4.20
3. HONORIUS – G Boss (4)
Very good campaign last Spring saw him placed in the G1 Spring Championship and narrowly missing out on claiming the G3 Norman Robinson. However, his two starts since returning from a spell have resulted in him being beaten a collective 26.5 lengths. Can’t have him here until he shows some of that Spring form.
Odds: $17.00
4. NINTH LEGION – D Dunn (3)
Initially with Anthony Cummings but now with Team Hawkes, this son of Fastnet Rock was narrowly defeated by Bradman last start in the Bendigo Guineas (1400m) under Dwyane Dunn who follows him up for today’s ride. Camped up on the pace then and from three, would expect him to do the same. The last time he visited Rosehill, he ran fourth in the G1 The Golden Rose – stays under notice.
Odds: $6.00
5. TOYDINI – B Shinn (2)
Guy Walter trained galloper who progressed from winning a restricted race at Kensington back in April of last year, to running second in the G3 Up and Coming and finishing close up in the Listed Ming Dynasty. He’s only had one run back from a spell and that was on a heavy track in a BM 85 event over 1200m where he closed well from the tail of the field. The step up to 1500m and a drier track are both positives and he’ll be finishing hard.
Odds: $5.50
6. ROWIE – C Reith (6)
Last campaign commenced with a fourth (beaten 1 ½ lengths) behind Tatra in Listed Ming Dynasty and finished with a second to Fiveandahalfstar in a BM 72 over 1800m so obviously has ability. He kicked off this campaign with a seventh of eleven in a BM 75 in Newcastle, expecting him to need longer than this now, to produce his best.
Odds: $17.00
7. TURNFLY – J McDonald (8)
A gelding by Olympus who at his most recent start finished four lengths behind Complicate in the Canberra Guineas. Got back in the Guineas but had rolled out in front at his previous two, including when winning a restricted race at Canterbury by three lengths. Should go forward again but also, should be caught.
Odds: $15.00
8. FORCE COMMAND – G Schofield (5)
Despite still looking for his maiden win after seven starts, this son of Commands trained by Greg Eurall, as produced some smart efforts including a ¾ length second to Sheer Talent and a half length third to Bradman and Ninth Legion in the Bendigo Guineas. He should be afforded a sweet run from five and may improve with being able to take a sit. He has shown enough to be considered here.
Odds: $11.00
9. INDIANAPOLIS – N Rawiller (1)
At only his third start, he went within a whisker of claiming the Listed Dulcify Quality (1900m) behind Proverb in September of last year and was then spelled by trainer Gai Waterhouse. Returned in the Canberra Guineas but after settling on the pace, weakened noticeably late and finished eighth, beaten over six lengths. He will to produce a significant turnaround of form to be winning here.
Odds: $13.00
10. HIGH SHOT – C Williams (10)
Mick Kent trains this High Chaparral colt who was a good winner of a Cranbourne Maiden on debut back in October of last year. He was spelled and then thrown in the deep end, finishing fifth in the G2 Autumn Stakes (1400m) behind Mulaazm and at his latest outing he placed eighth in the Australian Guineas behind Ferlax. Better suited this company and respect the trainer’s decision to come up for the race.
Odds: $10.00
11. COYOTE MISS – P Robl (7)
Only filly in the race who has had three starts for trainer Anthony Cummings few a couple of placings but she’ll find this much harder than her nose second in a restricted race at Newcastle, last start.
Odds: $81.00
OVERVIEW
Indianapolis and Ninth Legion go forward with Turnley from wider out. Going with the Melbourne form here and tipping the maiden Force Command who, from barrier five, will get every chance in the run. Also expecting High Shot, who is better placed in this company, to produce a run.
