The feature event for fillies on Saturday is the Kewney Stakes and despite a field of thirteen, it’s Norzita only that the punters have eyes for and she dominates the early market at $1.80. Only Members Joy and last start winner Meliora are under double figure odds at $9.00 and $7.50 respectively.

1. NORZITA – S Arnold (3)
Winner of the G1 Flight Stakes last Spring and the Thorn Park filly resumed with an impressive 1 ½ length win over Angelic Light in the Listed Typhoon Tracy (1200m). She certainly wouldn’t have had gone backwards with that run under her belt and from three, will not let bold front-running filly Meliora too far out of her sights.
Odds: $1.80
2. MEMBERS JOY – G Boss (4)
Went within a lip of claiming the Listed Kevin Hayes Stakes two starts back before chasing Meliora, who led by the best part of ten lengths, valiantly last start to finish 3 ½ lengths second. Won’t let that filly get that far in front this time and from four, will no doubt be in a position to stake a claim at the right stage of the race.
Odds: $9.00
3. MELIORA – L Nolen (10)
Bold tactics paid off last start for the daughter of Ad Valorem who was allowed to roll freely in front by Nolen and led by as many as eight lengths in the Armansco Stakes to finally register a commanding 3 ½ length win on the line. Will no doubt be out to do the same again this week but a bigger field here and did she show her hand a week too early?
Odds: $7.50
4. ALZORA – N Hall (2)
Notched up her second career win with a tough effort when resuming in the G3 The Vanity here at Flemington three weeks back. Been given time to get over that run and from a good draw here, expect that she’ll be in the mix come the final 100m.
Odds: $19.00
5. FLYING SNITZEL – C Williams (12)
Just hasn’t been able to produce the same kind of form that saw her win the G3 The Schweppes back in April of last year where she accounted for eventual VRC Oaks winner, Dear Demi. She resumed in the Light Fingers but after settling on the pace, weakened late to finish fifth behind the smart Bennetta. Wide draw doesn’t help for her fist way of Melbourne going.
Odds: $12.00
6. BALACLAVA LADY – T Clark (2)
Produced some nice efforts during the Spring including close up fourth placings in both the G2 Fillies Classic and Listed Lexus Hybrid behind Kazanluk and Walk With Attitude respectively. Did enough first up when resuming in the Listed Kevin Hayes but never got warm at her next and most recent start, when second to last in the G2 Armanasco behind Meliora. Form suggest you could forgive her last start but would rate her a place chance only here.
Odds: $41.00
7. KEEP DE ROSE – C Newitt (8)
A filly by Keeper trained by Danny O’Brien (who is enjoying a good run of success at the moment) that has won two from her first four starts. She tackles this race first up since winning a RST 72 event here at Flemington back in November. It is interesting that the stable has selected this race to kick her campaign off in and will pay to monitor any betting moves.
Odds: $61.00
8. PROPER MADAM – B Melham (7)
Stratum filly who won two of her first three starts before competing in and, being well accounted for, in some of the premier filly races during the Spring. She returned to racing from a twenty week spell with a fourth of eight (beaten 5.8 lengths) behind Norzita in the Listed Typhoon Tracy at Moonee Valley and can’t see her turning the tables on that horse here.
Odds: $61.00
9. RED FEZ – B Prebble (9)
Won a Ballarat Maiden on debut for Trainer David Hayes and backed that up with a strong win in a RST 68 event at Sandown. Off the back of those two wins, had a tilt at the G2 Armansco Stakes and chased tear-away leader Meliora valiantly to finish third. Showing above average ability but think from gate nine, she’ll have to give some good ones, too much start.
Odds: $13.00
10. PETITE DIABLESSE – V Duric (5)
Daughter of Sire Denon, who won both a Kilmore Maiden and a Ballarat RST 72 race before a huge run in the G3 The Vanity saw her finish third, beaten a head behind Alzora. With luck, she would’ve gone very close last start and would be shorter than the $13.00 quote currently on offer. Include her in all multiples.
Odds: $12.00
11. MYBENZ – (11)
She has won two of her four starts for Trainer Stuart Webb those being a Pakenham Maiden on debut and at her most recent start, a Ballarat RST 62 race. Fair to say she’ll be well and truly covered here.
Odds: $151.00
12. LA ZUMA – M Rodd (1)
Won on debut back in September last year and in four starts that followed, competed in some of the top 3yo fillies races without success. Hasn’t raced since finishing a distant last in the G1 Crown Oaks and with no trials to go on, can only suggest that it will be better to wait and watch.
Odds: $41.00
13. SHILLY SHALLY MISS – J Winks (13)
She is lining up for her fourth career start, of which she has won one – a Kyneton Maiden. Didn’t have a great deal of luck at her last start, a BM 78 race at Moonee Valley where she finished 3.6 lengths from the winner but will need more than a change of luck to be winning here.
Odds: $31.00
OVERVIEW
It is hard to go past Norzita who seemed only out for a track gallop when winning at the Valley first up but for some value, we’ll try and find a few to fill the placings behind here and I think, at $13.00 Petite Diablesse and Alzora ($17.00) – The Vanity form, might be worth including. The former was unlucky and the latter has always shows some promise and looks set to deliver this campaign.
