Warwick Stakes Form Guide

1. DANLEIGH

The old boy returns for yet another campaign and what will be his 54th career start. We have to go back to March 2011 to find his last victory which coincidently was here in the Group 1 Chipping Norton Stakes (1600m). Has produced some handy efforts first up previously generally over 1200m, so today’s first up tilt at a race over 1400m, with two barrier trials under his belt and at $21, does make you stop and think.

 Odds: $21.00

2. PINWHEEL

Made it three wins from five starts at this track last start with a 1 ¾ win in the G3 Missile Stakes. That effort sees him as the $3.30 favourite early in betting and if McEvoy can negotiate the awkward draw, he’ll be somewhere in the finish.

Odds: $3.30

3. CENTENNIAL PARK

Had his chance first up behind Pinwheel here a fortnight ago. His second up form doesn’t read as well with only the 1 win and 1 placing from seven attempts. Hard to see him turning the tables, especially from the wide draw.

Odds: $9.00

4. LAMASERY

Former Darley horse that has blossomed under the guidance of local trainer David Vandyke. Last prep the Commands mare won three of her six (2 x Group 3 and 1 Listed) all at 2000m and longer. Has had three barrier trails since the 29th July, winning the latest two so could be a bit more forward in condition than expected. Nominated for Caulfield Cup.

Odds: $17.00

5. BOLD GLANCE

QLD galloper who is coming off a Doomben Open company win where he carried 56.5 after the apprentices claim. Has visited Sydney twice in the past and recorded two very good third placing in the G3 Doncaster Prelude and G1 Doncaster so connection know what it’ll take to perform well here and with Munce and the inside draw in their favour – might be one for multiples even at the WFA scale.

Odds: $17.00

  $250 WARWICK STAKES FREE BET

6. STARTSMEUP

Another QLD who we saw in Sydney two starts back running third in Winter Stakes behind Irish Dream. Since then, the Gillian Heinrich galloper returned home to record two solid wins in Class 6 grade. Has ability and a good draw but shouldbe found out under the WFA conditions.

Odds: $21.00

7. MAULES CREEK

Lightly raced 5yo from the Patinack Farm team that progressed through his grades in good style last prep, culminating in victory in the Listed Randwick Quality (2000m). Has had two trials for his comeback in this race but has picked the deep end of the pool to jump into here.

Odds: $81.00

  $250 WARWICK STAKES FREE BET

8. TAGUS

Second of the Patinack Farm runners who made a return to racing after a 14 month lay-off with a seventh (beaten 10.1 lengths) behind Pinwheel here a fortnight ago. Will need this run just as much as he did the last one and would bebsurprised to see him finish in the first half of the field.

Odds: $101.00

9. ROLLING PIN

Finished third behind Pinwheel in the Missile Stakes upon his return to racing a fortnight ago. That effort would’ve pleased his trainer – Gwenda Markwell and given the benefit of that run now under his belt, connections may feel they will be able to better the beaten margin of 2.8 lengths last start.

Odds: $13.00

  $250 WARWICK STAKES FREE BET

10. POLISH KNIGHT

The now 4yo really blossomed last prep as his races increased in distance, winning the G2 Tulloch Stakes before running a close second in the AJC Derby. Had a very quite trial at Randwick just under two weeks ago, when not asked to do much. Nominated for some big races later in the Spring and this will be his first start in a long campaign.

Odds: $19.00

11. ROCK’N’POP

NZ’er who had built a good record at home before he ventured across for a tilt at the Group 1 Rosehill Guineas in March of this year. He finish 8th in that race (beaten 4.1), was not only immediately spelled but was also transferred to the Gai Waterhouse stable. Judging by his two barrier trial wins heading into this race, Gai has him up and running and at an early quote of $5.50 second favourite, bookmakers are taking no chances.

Odds: $5.50

12. LIGHTS OF HEAVEN

Sir Tristam mare who was rewarded for her efforts last prep with consecutive victories in the G2 events – Eagle Farm Cup and Brisbane Cup in June of this year. She has above natural ability – especially when the races increase in distance and will be watching her closing with a view of following her in future weeks.

Odds: $7.00

13. SECRET ADMIRER

Corey Brown takes over from Brenton Avdulla as the pilot of this 5yo mare from the Graham Begg Yard. She came agonisingly close in some big races last prep – second in the Coolmore and third in the George Ryder (beaten a long neck) but failed to land a victory from the six start campaign. Brown has been on her back for two trials she’s had leading into this event and from a good draw, expect her to be in a position to pounce when the turn.

Odds: $6.50

OVERVIEW

Think it’s now safe to say, Spring has sprung given the quality of these runners and this race. Expect a bit of pace early from Pinwheel and Rock ‘n’ Pop as they cross to forward positions from their wide gates. QLD pair Bold Glance and Startsmeup handy with Secret Admirer next. Has Gai had Rock ‘n’ Pop long enough to work her magic? He’ll be fit no doubt but at $5.50, let’s wait and see first before jumping in. Pinwheel will give a good account of himself as he always does and the 1400m looks ideal. Give chances to Secret Admirer first up at value – $6.50 and for those looking a little further afield still, Bold Glance and Danleigh both at $17.00 may be able to run a cheeky race.
