A race for the 3yo fillies, sees a field of twelve taking part with several runners backing up from last week’s G1 1000 Guineas won by Commanding Miss and, with only two of the twelve having won a race at their last two starts, it’ll be a tricky race from a punter’s perspective.

Fillies Classic Form Guide

1. BIG CHILL – J Bowman (9)

She led when producing a good effort two starts back in a Caulfield Open finishing third behind Balaclava Lady and A Time For Julia (since won) beaten 1 ¼ . She backed that up with a sixth in the 1000 Guineas where she had her chance in the run but was able to match it with the winners late. Expect her to go forward from her wide gate.

Odds: $8.00

2. LOVE FOR RANSOM – G Boss (1)

She produced a phenomenal effort to score on debut, flashing home here at Moonee Valley to claim Stella Lante right on the line. The Greg Eurall trained filly has had two starts since for a fifth in a Caulfield Open and seventh (beaten 5.1) in the 1000 Guineas. She’s only been average both of the above starts but hard to forget the debut effort.

Odds: $2.75

3. DONNA CATTIVA (2)

She won the Listed Oaklands Plate in Adelaide by four lengths last prep and finished that campaign off with a eighth, four lengths behind Sizzling in the G1 T J Smith (1600m). Her two starts this time in however have been below that mark and she’s been well beaten in both the Listed Cap D’antibes and G3 1000 Guineas Prelude. Would need to lift.

Odds: $21.00

4. STELLA LANTE – V Duric (3)

Daughter of Starcraft from the Morphetville Stable of John Hyam who has been competed well in her past three starts in Victoria including a last start fifth (beaten 3.1) in the 1000 Guineas. Prior to that she got too far back in a run behind Balaclava Lady and was bloused by Love For Ransom prior. Drawn well here tonight and would be considered among the leading chances.

Odds: $4.50

5. MAREEZA – L Nolen (8)

She was fourth up when closing well in the G3 Thoroughbred Classic for second (beaten a head) behind Cavalry Rose a fortnight ago at Caulfield. She was the only runner in the race to make any significant ground and the step up to the mile should suit. Would have to include off the strength of her last run.

Odds: $4.20

6. BALACLAVA LADY – M Walker (5)

Well bred in the filly by Charge Forward who got a sweet run and every chance two starts back from her inside draw when winning (40/1) a Caulfield 3yo Fillies event by a nose over A Time For Julia. Drew wider at her last start in the 1000 Guineas and got back before finishing ninth of six (beaten 6 lenghts). Better suited back to this grade.

Odds: $11.00

7. KAZANLUK – K McEvoy (12)

Won her Maiden when first up back in August and followed that up with a fifth of seven (beaten 4.6) in a BM 78 before being taken to Adelaide where, as a 14/1 shot, she finished third behind Maybe Discreet (won well since). Seems to be an improving type but will have to come from close to last from her wide draw should she be winning here.

Odds: $15.00

8. SULLEN ART – D Oliver (11)

She won her Maiden three starts back when scoring at Bendigo over the mile. Led, but found the class too hot at her next start when taking on the boy in a Caulfield Open (1700m), behind Hvaastan and finished last of thirteen (beaten 6.5) She dropped back in distance (1300m), class and in-running at her most recent start – when closing from the tail of the field to finish eighth (beaten 2.5) in a RST 62.

Odds: $67.00

9. POPPAEA – D Dunn (7)

A filly who has won one from her three starts to date, that being her second start in a Geelong Maiden (1400m) on a Slow track. She then stepped out in a RST 68 Fillies but at 11/2, never raised her backer’s hopes and finished last of eight. Can’t win this off that run.

Odds: $67.00

10. MOREAU – M Rodd (10)

Snitzel filly who has yet to register a win in her five career starts. The closest she has come was two starts back when leading throughout before running second (beaten 3 ¼ ) in Geelong Maiden. Another who may find this hard given her current form.

Odds: $41.00

11. EASY TO LOOK IT  (4)

She’s yet to register a place in her four career starts with 5.6 lengths the closest margins she’s finished behind a winner. Nope.

Odds: $151.00

12. VOLUME ONE  (6)

She’s only had the one start for her connections and it was a pleasing effort when closing from well back in the field in a Cranbourne Maiden to run third, beaten 1 ¾. Obviously better for that experience but is eligible for easier races than this.

Odds: $15.00

OVERVIEW

Two that stand out here are Stella Lante and Mareeza. The former has been very consistent and competed well in some of the better fillies races and she’ll appreciate the drop back in grade of this race and has performed well at the circuit previously which is always a bonus. Mareeza was the eye-catcher last start and the step up to a mile should play right into her hands.
