Epsom Handicap Form Guide

1. SHOOT OUT

Big effort a fortnight ago where he stepped out, first up over a mile in the G1 George Main Stakes and under WFA conditions, and won by a neck. That made it two wins and a second from this track/trip and can’t see him having gone backwards from his first up run.

Odds: $5.50

2. RANGIRANGDOO

He was very game in defeat behind Shoot Out last start and he is another that possess a very good record at this track and trip (five starts for two wins and two placings). This race third up looks ideal for him but the draw has done him no favours.

Odds: $8.50

3. SECRET ADMIRER

Third up this prep last start when third behind Shoot Out in the George Main (beaten 2.8) a fortnight ago. Back to handicap conditions sees her drop 3kg from that race and she did win this race, fourth up last year after similar lead up form. Not to be underestimated.

Odds: $8.50

4. MONTON

Has had three runs in this prep, the latest was when he lugged 59kg in the Cameron Handicap won by Rolling Pin (who won again last week). Drops to a nice weight of 53 kilos here but from four Randwick starts, has yet to run a place and draws wide as well.

Odds: $61.00

5. YOSEI

Ran third in the Doncaster during the Autumn behind More Joyous (beaten 1.1). Got back and failed to make an impression here in the George Main under WFA conditions, better suited here, drawn well and might be one at double figures to throw into the multiples.

Odds: $15.00

6. AMBIDEXTER

Very good in winning the Theo Marks when taking on the older horses for the first time at Rosehill a fortnight ago. He drops 4kgs under the Handicap conditions and drawn to get every chance in the run. He’s a horse that has always shown plenty of potential and the opening quote of $7.00 is appealing.

Odds: $6.50

7. ROLLING PIN

He won the G3 Cameron Handicap two starts back and backed that up with a win in the G2 Shannon Stakes (surviving a protest) last week at Rosehill. Lining up for his third start in three weeks but is in form, drops 5kgs on his Shannon win and from his draw, will take up a handy position.

Odds: $26.00

8. FAT AL

First up pushed Ambidexter all the way in the Theo Marks and then stepped at last week as 3/1 on favourite in the Shannon Stakes but couldn’t claw back Rolling Pin and finished third. Might’ve just had the edge off him second up and his record warrants another chance here. Combine that with his draw and allotted weight, he is the early favourite at $4.40.

Odds: $4.40

9. KONTIKI PARK

He was excellent when winning first up under 58.5kgs and again next start when an unlucky second to Tagus in the G3 Tramway Hcp (Moment of Change third in that race, won the G1 Sir Rupert Clarke at Caulfield last Sunday). Last start got back in the Cameron Hcp which was won by Rolling Pin who led. Better suited here not without some hope at big double figure odds.

Odds: $21.00

10. SOMEPIN ANYPIN

Returned to racing with a third in the Listed Show County behind Moment of Change but in two subsequent runs, has struggled under the WFA conditions and finished outside the placings. Likely to roll forward and better suited here with 52kgs but will he be able to hold them off?

Odds: $26.00

11. WILD AND PROUD

Finished an unexpected long last when first up in the Tramway Hcp before a much better effort last start when ridden forward, to finish third in the Bill Ritchie. If they stick with his regular pattern of being ridden forward, he may have to do some work from his gate.

Odds: $17.00

12. TAGUS

Surprise winner (40/1) of the G3 Tramway Stakes at Warwick Farm two starts back and then stuck on well after every chance in the run behind Rolling Pin in the Cameron Handicap. Drawn to get a good run and any sting out of the ground helps his cause but will probably be big odds again.

Odds: $51.00

13. SAID COM

Started 7/2 favourite last start in the Bill Ritchie and chased tearaway leader and eventual winner, Step In Time, hard to the line. Awkward draw here doesn’t help his chances but will appreciate the tempo of an Epsom and will be doing his best work late.

Odds: $15.00

14. LIGHTINTHENITE

Lightly raced 5yo from the John O’Shea yard who resumed in the Cameron Handicap and finished well to just miss claiming Rolling Pin. Interesting to see where he ends up from the inside draw and how he’ll go tackling a race such as the Epsom second up.

Odds: $15.00

15. GANSTER’S CHOICE

Resumed with in good style with a win in a BM 85 at Warwick Farm and has been very competitive in three subsequent Benchmark races. Different ball game here though.

Odds: $81.00

OVERVIEW

Like any big mile race at Randwick, there are a host of chances here. It’s hard to go past Shoot Out given his stats here and the fact that, if anything, he’ll be better for his first up win and he did run second to champion mare More Joyous in the Autumn version of this race – The Doncaster, carrying 56kgs. Secret Admirer won this race last year as she is this year, fourth up from a spell and her lead up form is very similar. She’s also a similar quote at $8.00 and from her three starts here over the mile, she’s recorded two Group 1 wins and a Group 1 placing. Looking for value, Kontiki Park appeals at $21.00, given the anticipated run he’ll get.
