Calaway Gal Stakes Guide

1. MISSY LONGSTOCKINGS – D Browne (5)

She’s had a two starts for Trainer Liam Birchley and could not have been any more impressive in either of them. The daughter of Sequalo won at debut at Toowoomba by 5.8 lengths back in October before winning by seven, accounting for Moroccan Rose, at Eagle Farm two weeks later. She has had a soft trial since, is drawn perfectly in five and is the one they have to beat.

Odds: $1.65

2. GREYTFILLY – R Wiggins (8)

From the Robert Heathcote yard, this daughter of Ferocity has also had two starts. On debut she was third (beaten 2.6) to Octane Flyer at Doomben and then finished very well from midfield to record a 2 ¾ length win at Eagle Farm and turned the tables on Octane Flyer. Last run was impressive, that was back in October and there’s been no trials but she should be considered one of the leading chances here.

Odds: $4.40

3. GLOBAL DREAM – M Cahill (2)

Well bred filly by Fastnet Rock who is a half sister to the well performed Maraatib (second in Wakeful, fourth in VRC Oaks) from Tony Gollan stables. Only run to date was a solid second placing in an Eagle Farm 2yo race in early October behind Pretty Strong (who hasn’t raced since). She won a trial comfortably at Toowoomba on the 4th December and would include for the multiples.

Odds: $4.40

4. MOROCCAN ROSE – J Lloyd (6)

Off the back of her impressive trial performance, she was sent out as a 10/9 favourite for Trainer Gillian Heinrich on debut where she jumped well and sat second behind Missy Longstockings in the run but just wasn’t able to keep up with that filly over final stages. She would have improved on that outing but improved enough to counter the seven lengths of last start?

Odds: $17.00

5. JITTERBUG – G Colless (10)

A very well bred filly by Danehill Dancer out Ballybleue who herself, won the G2 Silver Slipper in 2004 as a 2yo. Her only career start was back in October and she just held her ground in the run home before finishing third (beaten 6.8 lengths) behind Whiskey Allround. Won a barrier trial under Colless on the 4th December but think she’ll find a few too nippy for her.

Odds: $12.00

6. MARACOOLA – C Munce (1)

By Freeze out of the Royal Academy mare, Manuka Honey, she’s only had the one start in her career and that was a fifth of ten behind Real Surreal (beaten 3.9 lengths). Drew wide on that occasion and got back and having drawn the inside here, they might be a big more aggressive with her.

Odds: $51.00

7. GALLERY OF STARS – M Hellyer (3)

Russell Cameron presents this daughter of Excellent Art for her first start. She had a trial at Doomben earlier this month and wasn’t asked to do a great deal behind Global Dream, running third (beaten 6 ¼ lengths). One of the debutants that, should there be any money for, will pay to consider.

Odds: $126.00

8. GAYLEN –                (7)

This will be the first time most of us will get a look at this daughter of Husson Lightning from the Trevor Thomas stables on the Sunshine Coast. She’ll be the first of the dam’s two named foals to race and we haven’t seen her at any official trials. Not much to go on.

Odds: $21.00

9. LOOK AT ANYTHING – J Byrne (11)

By Casino Prince out of Zabeel mare Vereza who has had five named foals, three to race with one of them being a winner. She’s had two trial for her trainer John Thompson but has been well accounted for them in both and wouldn’t be able to consider a legitimate chance on what we’ve seen of her.

Odds: $101.00

10. RED RYDER –               (9)

Darrly Hansen trains this Red Dazzler filly on the Sunshine Coast and this will be the first time punters will get to see her on the racetrack. Her dam, Sonjara only had the one start and has produced two foals to race, both of them with poor race records. Not for me.

Odds: $21.00

11. TIARAZOU – P Hammersley (12)

First starter by Zizou out of the good race mare Tenant’s Tiara who won four of her nine starts for Trainer Kevin Moses including the Listed Strada Stakes and a Group 2 placing in the Sapphire Stakes behind Belong Too Many. She’s the first foal of the dam and we haven’t seen her at any trials. If she hadn’t drawn wide, might’ve suggested her for multiple players.

Odds: $21.00

12. ZIGGIE’S DANCER – T Bell (4)

She’s another first starter also by Zizou with her dam being Tropical Beat. Her full relation and the only other foal to race by the dam, has raced twice in Adelaide this year and been comprehensively beaten on both occasions.

Odds: $21.00

SUMMARY

Just can’t see how they are going to make up the ground Missy Longstockings beat them by last start and can’t see enough in the breeding or trial form of the debutantes to consider them hopeful here. Missy Longstocking reminds me a lot of Liam Birchley’s other smart two year old Paprika and appears to be following a similar path to that horse who ultimately ran a close second in the Magic Million of 2009. He might go close again with this girl.
