A 7.7 per cent decline in New Zealand racing turnover during March has been attributed to normal fluctuations and changing betting behaviour, according to Entain NZ managing director Sam Moncur.
Monthly figures released by Entain show total turnover on New Zealand thoroughbred racing reached $40.8 million in March, compared to $44.8 million for the same period last year.
Wagering on the NZB Kiwi also eased, dropping from $1.37 million to $1.07 million year-on-year, while betting turnover declined across other major races including the Auckland Cup and the New Zealand Derby.
Despite the fall in turnover, the number of active racing customers increased significantly, rising from 109,365 in March 2025 to 121,043 in March 2026.
Moncur indicated the figures reflect a shift toward fixed-odds wagering rather than a decline in overall engagement with the sport.
