Punters have opened their wallets and smashed an International raider at odds to win Tuesday’s $6.2m Melbourne Cup.
The Joseph O’Brien trained son of High Chapparel who just sired the Victoria Derby winner ‘Rekindling’ opened in the Melbourne Cup Final Field at $16 with Sportsbet before punters went bang, smashing the lightly raced galloper into $11 with a flood of money continuing to come for him.
Another big push for punters is that owner Lloyd Williams has stated he will be on course to watch the race in which he has six runners but rarely heads to the racecourse unless he feels he is a very good chance of winning. Williams has ownership interests in Almandin, Johannes Vermeer, Bondi Beach, US Army Ranger, Gallante and Rekindling.
Lloyd Williams say he will be trackside at the Cup tomo and cants split his top 3 hopes Almandin, Rekindling and Joannes Vermeer @RSN927

On RSN this morning Williams indicated that Rekindling and Almandin were his best chances in the race.
Just had Lloyd Williams on RSN. Huge push for Rekindling, Almandin in top form and won’t rule out Bondi Beach as a long shot…

Since markets opened on the Final Field Saturday night there have been two runners punters have been keen to back with both at value with Amelie’s Star the other galloper who has been well supported shortening from $23 to $16.
Almandin holds favouritism at $8.50 but has been easy ($7-$8.50) slightly with Sportsbet.com.au ahead of Marmelo who got out to $10 but has been backed into his opening price of $9.
