Group l racing for the Brisbane Winter Carnival kicks off this Saturday at Doomben with the Doomben 10,000 (1200m) attracting a high class field, highlighted by Everest winner Giga Kick, who is odds on.

2023 Doomben 10,000 Speed Map
Looks to be good speed engaged. Overpass and Eduardo look the main two speed influences, and they probably sit 1-2 unless Nash forces the issue and wants the lead on Eduardo. Centrefire and Prince Of Boom won’t be too far away, as well as Vilana from the inside gate.
2023 Doomben 10,000 Runner Preview:
1. Eduardo: Grand campaigner that resumes. To me, this is sort of a career defining prep/run as to whether they persist and have a crack at The Everest or he’s just looking for a paddock to enjoy life. Beaten a lip in The Challenge and then down the track in The Galaxy. Trial was good, he lands on speed and did win this race two years ago. He’ll give a sight but the track won’t be wet enough.
2. Mazu: Defending champ from last year that is ticking along beautifully towards winning it again. He was game as ever in the All Aged but chased the tearaway leader and was a tired horse late. Back to 1200m is a big tick, he’s genuine, and if there is petrol left in the tank, he’ll be around the mark.
3. A Case Of You: Market said he’d need the run in the Victory Stakes and while he didn’t win, I really liked the way he found the line late behind Rothfire, clocking good late splits. If he is able to settle closer in the run, he has the finale to launch over the top.
4. Overpass: Big, big win from him in The Quokka at Ascot. He was there to be beaten but he just found and the photo went his way, beating a star in Amelia’s Jewel. Can he back that up? If the answer is yes, then he is a definite threat to Giga Kick.
5. Vilana: Hard to beat, clearly. Lot of quality about his win fresh in the Hall Mark, sitting wide no cover but he gave them a spanking in such an impressive return. Tick over trial last week was a lovely piece of work and with the James Cummings polish, sense of time, he’s easily likeable.
6. Prince Of Boom: He has come back in really good order. Sustained speed came to the fore when a dominant first up winner in the Ascot Handicap before going to the Victory Stakes at WFA and he was far from disgraced when third to Rothfire. He’s a good horse…good enough to win this? I am saying no.
7. Weona Smartone: He led and gave a bold sight in The Archer at Rockhampton and was only run down late when third. The track pattern was in his corner and I am not sure how strong that form is. Happy to let him go around.
8. Giga Kick: Doomben and the tight track is the only thing stopping me from declaring Giga Kick a moral. He’s got claims to being the best horse in Australia, and hard to argue given his deeds this season, including last start when recording his maiden Group l win, bolting up in the All Aged. Zaaki franked that form last Saturday in the Hollindale so it’s all boxes ticked, bar the Doomben track first time looking at it, but he’s a pro, a star and will be launching over the top.
9. Aft Cabin: Aft Cabin can nearly confirm his spot in The Everest with a win here. James Cummings tried to stretch him to a mile but he failed in the Randwick Guineas so the stable freshened him up and he produced an amazing performance to win the Arrowfield Sprint. Loved his trial last week at Canterbury and being trained as a sprinter, he can easily explode and make a statement.
10. Mariamia: One of the more improved horses in Sydney and no shock it’s been done with Joe Pride. Freshened up since running out of her skin in the TJ Smith behind I Wish I Win, proving that the win in The Galaxy was no fluke. Tick over trial was good and she’s become very genuine. Can’t dismiss her entirely.
11. Centrefire: IMO, she would have been extremely hard to beat in the Bright Shadow. Can understand connections want a crack at a Group l, but she’s no chance here, even with a kind map. Deserving rank outsider and $101 is unders.
