The feature race at Randwick this Saturday is the Chelmsford Stakes (1600m), with multiple Group l winner Ceolwulf dominating the market.

2025 Chelmsford Stakes Runner Preview:
1. Arapaho: He rarely runs badly first up and he continued that trend in the Winx Stakes when placing. Might be a case of second up syndrome…maybe. But he’s just so damn genuine.
2. Ceolwulf: Ceolwulf…I’ve said my piece re ride in the Winx Stakes. I think he fights the finish out if he holds the back of Via Sistina. He ran enormous against the pattern and there is no horse of that quality here. Just needs a good steer from Chad and he’ll be winning this.
3. Vauban: There looks to be intent with 3 Vauban to have him forward in condition. He resumes for GaiBott, having not raced since the Queen Elizabeth when down the track but far from disgraced in defeat behind Via Sistina. Trials have been quite good and first up last prep, he was scintillating in the Sky High.
4. Lindermann: Lindermann will love getting to firmer footing. Track was too wet for him in the Winx Stakes and his wheels were spinning when asked for the effort. I thought he had trialled up like a rocket leading in so back on top of the ground, he’s a definite improver.
5. Sir Delius: The market push early says he’s here to play despite being aimed at the Cups. Trial work has been that of a horse being aimed at the Cups…is he sharp enough to win at the mile? IMO, no.
6. Huetor: Handy veteran better suited over further and isn’t measuring up against these.
7. Land Legend: The clear eye catcher behind War Eternal at Rosehill, clocking good late splits. But, drawn wide here, he’ll likely be back near last…I can’t see him giving them a start and a beating.
8. Adelaide River: Wide and tired late behind War Eternal in the race mentioned above, but needs more racing and more ground.
9. Athabascan: Likely has eyes on The Metropolitan/Cups, so won’t be troubling these. But, his trial work suggests he’s come back really well.
10. Birdman: IMO, J Mac jumping off tells me this horse isn’t top seed for this and better races. Good return, but just not entirely sold on him.
11. Robusto: Far from disgraced in the Winx Stakes but I just don’t think he is up to these.
12. Full Count Felicia: Dry track helps her cause vs the Winx Stakes when finding wet ground. Maps ideally, she is a first four contender at a price.

Fitter and on a dry deck, Lindermann should spear across and lead. It’ll be interesting what the GaiBott pair or Vauban and Sir Delius do. Both have been on speed in trials but on race day have opted for a sit. Robusto and Arapaho won’t be far away.
