The crown jewel in Sydney’s Autumn Carnival, The Championships, kicks off this Saturday at Randwick, where punters will be treated to four Group One races on a stacked ten race card.
Grant Palmer, CEO of Palmerbet, gives us his early thoughts on what looks an incredible day of racing.
Who is your best bet of the day at Randwick?
Looking to the Derby with our best bet, where Ace High looks set to bounce back from the Rosehill Guineas. He had absolutely no luck whatsoever in that event, caught three-wide the trip before eventually weakening out for 6th.
The run was full of merit and from barrier 2 this Saturday, he should get the run of the race. Finally getting out to his optimum distance, and with the track drying out, he looks a terrific play at $5.
Who is the best-backed horse of the day at this stage?
Oohood has been met with solid support early in the G1 Sires Produce Stakes, firming from $4-$3.50. She was the flashing light run in the Golden Slipper closing strongly for 2nd, and punters think she can finally crack the maiden this weekend.
Who is your best each-way play of the day?
Since being gelded, Dissolution is absolutely flying for new trainer Brad Widdup, and looks good odds at $12 in race 2, the Carbine Club Stakes (1600m). He’s up in class significantly here, but looks to be improving every start, and can certainly upset the more credentialed gallopers in the race.
Who is your lay of the day at Randwick?
Demerara comes up the $3.50 favourite in Race 3, the PJ Bell Stakes, but she looks skinny at the quote to us. She’s been airborne all preparation in weaker grade, but strikes an incredibly strong field of fillies here, and we’ll be keen to look around her at the current odds.
