The Golden Slipper is run over a distance of 1200 metres under set weight conditions, and has been contested since 1957. A number of famous horses, trainers, and jockeys have been involved with this event over the years, with some names going on to perform well at the Cox Plate and Melbourne Cup after this event. Horses may come into the Golden Slipper from a range of events, with the most obvious lead up races being the Pago Pago Stakes, Todman Stakes for colts and geldings, and Reisling Stakes.

The Golden Slipper is the premier attraction of Golden Slipper Day, one of the biggest days of racing on the Australian calendar. Other Group 1 races on the day include the George Ryder Stakes, Ranvet Stakes, The Galaxy and the Rosehill Guineas.
