Up & Coming Stakes History and past winners

The Up and Coming Stakes is a Group 3 race taking place at Warwick Farm Racecourses on August 25th.  This race is held on the same day as the Group 2 Warwick Stakes, with the female equivalent, Silver Shadow Stakes, also run on the same day. This 1300 metre race has a long and interesting history in Australian racing, stretching back to 1979.  During this time, there has been a number of changes to the Up and Coming Stakes, including group changes and alterations to conditions.

Originally a colts and geldings only race with set weights, the Up and Coming Stakes changed to new conditions in 2011, which is when the distance was also increased by 100 metres.  This race has also alternated between a Group 2 and Group 3 race for a number of years now, becoming a Group 3 race in 2006, and switching between Group 2 and Group 3 from 2009 to 2012.

The Up and Coming Stakes has been won by some great horses in the past, including Mahogany, General Nediym, and Testa Rossa in the 1990s, Exceed And Excel in 2003, Fastnet Rock in 2004, Snitzel in 2005, and Court Command in 2006.  The 2011 race was taken out by Manawanui, with Queenian coming in second and Detours in third.
