It’s been fun getting to know some of Australia’s talented young country trainers and in our latest QUICK QUESTIONS series we have a chat with the Kembla Grange based Joseph Ible.
What is your first racing memory?
Sitting on my Dad’s horses as he walked them to track work at Wagga.
Who is your favourite horse and why?
Shogun Lodge, he was a warhorse and ran at the highest level for a long time and would have had an imposing record if he hadn’t bumped into horses like champions Sunline, Lonhro and Northerly.
Who is the best horse you’ve been involved with?
More Joyous.
And the best horse you have seen?
Black Caviar.
Who do you admire most in racing?
From a training perspective Joe Pride and Chris Waller, from bloodstock and breeding, Henry Field.
Who is your ‘what if’ horse?
Souad, a filly we purchased at Magic Millions for $47,500. She ran fourth in a stakes race at her first start as a two-year-old and died tragically during her next preparation. Subsequently her half-brother Autumn Boy has become a Group 1 winner.
What is one change/improvement you’d love to see in racing?
Any effort to reduce the costs for owners.
What’s the funniest moment you’ve experienced in racing?
My first post race interview was a shambles, not funny in the moment but definitely had a good laugh about it later.
What is your favourite racing moment/biggest thrill?
Stable favourite Ons Vier winning at Canberra on Melbourne Cup day by six lengths. It was a really enjoyable day spent with friends cheering her home with a big crowd on course.
What is your favourite pastime outside of racing?
Golf.
What is your favourite T.V show?
Entourage.
Best concert you’ve seen?
The Strokes.
What slogan summarizes your outlook on life?
Show up, stay kind, keep going.
Favourite food?
Mexican.
Favourite racetrack?
Rosehill or Wagga.
If you weren’t a racehorse trainer what would you be doing?
Working in sports somewhere.
