Star galloper Broadsiding will not be rushed to Melbourne ahead of the colts most significant race of his career. The three-year-old is set to arrive at Godolphin’s Flemington stables on Thursday, just days before his appearance in the $3 million Caulfield Guineas (1600m) on Saturday.
Over the weekend, Broadsiding was listed with betting sites at $1.75 for the Caulfield Guineas, where he has the opportunity not only to solidify his dominance among his fellow three-year-olds but also to position himself as a contender to take on older horses in the prestigious Cox Plate.
Touted as one of the most promising three-year-olds for the Cox Plate in recent years, Broadsiding’s potential victory in the Guineas would open new doors for him, according to Godolphin’s general manager, Andy Makiv. “First, we’ll focus on the mile, which he has already proven he’s comfortable with, and then we’ll keep the Cox Plate as a potential option,” Makiv said on Saturday.
Makiv added, “He’s in great form and recovered well from his first-up run, so we’re all excited about what’s to come. He’ll complete his final workout on Tuesday at Osborne Park in NSW, before traveling to Flemington on Thursday. But first, he’s got a job to do at Caulfield, and we’re hopeful everything goes smoothly.”
Last month, Broadsiding made history as the first horse to win the Group 1 Golden Rose (1400m) first-up in Sydney, following two dominant Group 1 victories as a juvenile.
He is now the shortest-priced Caulfield Guineas favourite since The Autumn Sun, who won the race at $1.70 in 2018. A victory in this stallion-making classic could also mark a major milestone for jockey James McDonald, who is on the verge of his 100th Group 1 win.
