Leon Davies was as surprised as anyone when Krygios stormed home to win Sunday’s Moree Air-Conditioning & Refrigeration Class 1 Handicap (1200m).
The four-year-old bay gelding rushed home to overpower Colt Prosser’s Stop The Fight and a second career win at his 11th start.
“Someone came to me and asked me why he was shortening,” Leon Davies said of a gelding son of Eavesdropper who had been a $26 but plummeted to odds of about $8 with on-course bookies.
“I said I don’t know why.” He said his gelding had been the victim of wet tracks at recent starts.
“But I don’t know why he handled it today (Heavy 8). He won his maiden at Walcha on a good track.”
The Tamworth trainer then celebrated a race to race double when Darren Jones sooled Rubymay home and win the Moree Tyrepower Benchmark 65 Handicap (1200m).
It was the six-year-old mare’s fourth race win after finishing a 10 length 10th at Narromine at her previous start.
“You can forget her last start at Narromine, it was an absolute glue pot,” Leon Davies said.
“Her start before that she was fourth in Sydney and went to the line hard held. It’s good to see her back.”
Davies has her booked in to Nicconi this season but may continue to race even if she is in foal.
