Having already stitched up the title of the season’s champion juvenile, Pierro has done the same to his Champagne Stakes rivals to claim the two-year-old triple crown.

Sent out at $1.22 in Saturday’s Champagne (1600m) at Randwick, Pierro travelled comfortably behind the leader Tatra ($151) around the home turn.

Once he straightened up the colt lengthened stride and strode to the front to the cheers of the crowd to go to the line 2-3/4 lengths in front of the chasing Dear Demi ($19) with Tatra 2-1/4 lengths away third.

Pierro became the sixth winner of the juvenile triple crown of the Golden Slipper, Sires’ Produce Stakes and Champagne Stakes and joined Baguette (1970) as an unbeaten winner of the title.

“We have seen a colt write himself into history today,” trainer Gai Waterhouse said.

“He is outstanding and I am really privileged to get a horse like this.

“He is very special.”

Waterhouse heralded her opinion of Pierro in October when she announced after his winning debut in the Breeders Plate the crowd had just seen the Golden Slipper winner.

That self-fulfilling prophecy came true but even she was not brave enough to predict he would win all six starts at two.

The colt’s jockey Nash Rawiller said Pierro continued to surprise him, especially as he stepped up in distance.

“He continues to raise the bar,” he said.

“Every time he steps out he surprises me a little bit more.

“He is something special.”

That something special was not apparent when the son of Lonhro was sold as a weanling for $115,000 in 2010.

The following year Waterhouse paid $230,000 for the colt at the Magic Millions Yearling Sale on behalf of Greg and Debbie Kolivos.

He has now given the couple a return of almost $3 million with the promise of more to come with the major studs already circling.

“We are just enjoying what is happening now,” Greg Kolivos said.

“He is sheer class and we are just starting to see the best of him now.

“Imagine what he can do as a three-year-old.”

Kolivos would not comment on the Cox Plate other than to say he thought Pierro would handle 2000 metres.

However, Dear Demi’s owner John Singleton and the filly’s trainer Clarry Conners are dreaming big.

“She bumped into a superstar, a freak,” Singleton said.

“But what fun we are going to have with her in the future.

“Clarry already wants to go Oaks/Derby in Melbourne in the spring and Oaks/Derby here in the autumn.”
