Wayne Rooney’s venture into horse ownership with his wife Coleen has attracted much attention to the sport of racing.
The Manchester United and England striker with 2.3 million Twitter followers has bought two horses which will be trained by Tom Dascombe whose stable is financed by Rooney’s teammate Michael Owen.
Rooney told the Racing Post his interest was sparked by an invitation by Owen to visit Dascombe’s yard.
“Michael showed me and my family around last month and I was very impressed with the facilities and with Tom Dascombe,” Rooney said.
“I’m really excited to have a horse at Manor House stables.”
Dascombe said he was delighted to have the Rooneys join the stable.
“We hope that Wayne’s involvement will bring the sport some publicity outside of the normal racing media and hopefully attract some new fans and followers,” he said on his website.
“Wayne and Coleen’s two horses are a two-year-old colt called Tomway and a yearling colt by Bahamian Bounty out of Amazon Beauty, yet to be named. Wayne’s colours are pink and white.”
Boylesports make Tomway even money to win a race next year, while he is 10-1 to land a Listed or Group-race prize in 2012.
William Hill offer 200-1 for Rooney to follow in the footsteps of former England player Mick Channon and take up a trainer’s licence by the end of 2020.
