Daddy Long Legs has won the $US2 million ($A1.93 million) UAE Derby, holding off a late charge from Yang Tse Kiang to give trainer Aidan O’Brien at least one victory on Saturday.
Australian entry Helmet, trained by Peter Snowden, came out of the gates first and held the lead over Daddy Long Legs halfway through the 1900-metre race in the United Arab Emirates.
Daddy Long Legs took the lead and led for the rest of the way, beating Yang Tse Kiang with the favourite Wrote finishing third.
O’Brien’s victory comes a year after his horse Master of Hounds lost a photo finish to Khawlah in the same race.
O’Brien has the favourite, Australian champion So You Think, in the $US10 million ($A9.65 million) Dubai World Cup – the world’s richest horse race – later on Saturday.
