Talented three-year-old Zamorar earned a shot at next month’s A R Creswick Stakes when he showed plenty of grit to fight back and win after being clearly headed in the straight at Caulfield.
Sent out the $1.90 favourite in the Seppelt Wines Hcp (1100m), Zamorar was taken straight to the front by apprentice Jake Duffy.
The Darren Weir trained Platelet ($5), ridden by apprentice Damian Lane, appeared to get a head in front of Zamorar who kicked back gamely and got the bob in on the line to score by a short half head.
Grand Brittania ($26) was 2-3/4 lengths away third.
Seymour trainer David “Butch” Bourne is now looking forward to the Listed $100,000 Creswick (1200m) at Flemington on June 9.
“He’s had a couple of goes at the top level and he’s fallen short by a fraction so we’ll go back there again,” Bourke said.
“We’ll take him there (to Flemington) in two weeks time then take it from there.”
The Scandal Keeper gelding has won four of his eight starts with two seconds.
Last spring he ran fourth to Sepoy in the Group One Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m) at Flemington while three runs back he was fourth as favourite to Go The Knuckle in the Group Two Euclase Stakes (1200m) at Morphettville.
Bourne said Zamorar hadn’t had a trial before he came back from a break and was narrowly beaten by Vatican over 1000m at Caulfield late last month.
“He got nabbed by a fitter horse, something that had been going round,” he said.
“He’ll improve again off that.
While Bourne thought he got the bob in on the line, Duffy didn’t.
“I thought I got beat,” Duffy said.
