Leading trainer Kelso Wood knows a progressive sprinter when he sees one.

Wood believes Someday can measure up in open company after he posted another dominant win at Doomben on Saturday as a pronounced $1.26 favourite.

“He’s developing well this campaign and you’d think he can win in open company the way he’s going,” Wood said.

Someday has earned comparisons with Wood’s talented sprinter Belltone who made a rapid rise through the ranks twelve months ago to be rated one of Queensland’s best sprinters with wins in the Eye Liner Stakes and Glasshouse Handicap during this year’s winter carnival.

Wood was not concerned when Someday was awkwardly placed approaching the home turn before he burst through a gap to win convincingly with jockey Michael Cahill aboard.

“There was a bit of competitive riding going on there for a while but luckily he was going well enough to get through the gap in the straight,” Wood said.

Cahill was impressed with Someday’s acceleration when he asked the four-year-old for an effort at the 200m.

“He was always travelling well within himself and when I pressed the button he let down well,” he said.

“Obviously he’s a pretty smart horse. Just what heights he can reach only time will tell but he’s in the right hands.”

Wood maintained his excellent strike rate 35 minutes later when Grey Assignment ($2.10 fav) edged out Topping ($2.50) to win the Mount Franklin Sparkling Open Handicap (2000m) by a half-neck.

When asked if Grey Assignment was a genuine stayer, Wood replied: “Not after that. He had a soft run and only just got there. I’d say a mile is probably his best trip.”

Wood confirmed his spring carnival spearhead Sizzling would fly to Melbourne on Friday before he resumed in the Blue Sapphire (1200m) at Caulfield on October 13.

“His jump out was mighty. Just what I wanted him to do,” he said.
