Robert Smerdon-trained Shewan has jumped up the qualifying order for the Melbourne Cup after being penalised 1.5kg for winning the Herbert Power Stakes at Caulfield.
Racing Victoria chief handicapper Greg Carpenter on Monday announced the penalty which elevates Shewan to 43rd in the Cup order of entry.
The Robert Smerdon-trained stayer was unqualified for the Cup before Saturday’s win.
He will now carry 51.5kg in the Melbourne Cup, but he was a non-acceptor for Saturday’s Caulfield Cup.
“Shewan gave a strong staying performance to beat Tanby with Ebor Handicap winner Moyenne Corniche closing late to take third place in the Group Two race,” Carpenter said.
“The penalty is the same assigned to Alcopop when he won the race in 2009 and to Master O’Reilly when he was victorious in 2007.”
In other news from the Herbert Power, the Robert Hickmott-trained Tanby has also passed the first ballot clause for the Melbourne Cup with his second placing and thus moves to 55th in the order of entry.
