Bookmakers were saved a fortune when imported galloper Midsummer Sun failed badly in the Group Three Premier’s Cup at Doomben on Saturday.
Melbourne visitor Midsummer Sun was backed as though unbeatable from $3.80 into $2.70 although during the week as much as $6 was bet with corporate bookmakers.

Midsummer Sun had won his only two starts in Melbourne after coming from England.
Jockey Glen Boss was able to get Midsummer Sun into a good position after being trapped deep early but the imported galloper compounded in the straight to finish near last.
The race was won by maestro trainer Bart Cummings’s Precedence who came from midfield to score an impressive win.
Precedence ($16) scored his second win since taking the 2010 Moonee Valley Cup when he beat Less Is More ($6.50) by a length with a short head to Zennista ($11).
Stable foreman Reg Fleming said Precedence would now be set for the Brisbane Cup (2400m) on June 8.
“He has gone around in the past three Melbourne Cups. The Brisbane Cup is perfect for him,” he said.
Precedence has been a great money spinner for his connections who include Cummings’s long-time owner Dato Tan Chin Nam and breeder Sir Patrick Hogan. He has now won eight races and more than $1.2 million in prizemoney.
Winning jockey Hugh Bowman said Precedence had been suited by the fast pace and had let down well when clear in the straight.
